Publisher's Summary

What did God use to draw a radical, committed unbeliever to himself? Did God take her to an evangelistic rally? Or, since she had her doctorate in literature, did he use something in print? No, God used an invitation to dinner in a modest home, from a humble couple who lived out the Gospel daily, simply, and authentically.

With this story of her conversion as a backdrop, Rosaria Butterfield invites us into her home to show us how God can use this same “radical, ordinary hospitality” to bring the Gospel to our lost friends and neighbors. Such hospitality sees our homes as not our own but as God’s tools for the furtherance of his kingdom as we welcome those who look, think, believe, and act differently from us into our everyday, sometimes messy lives - helping them see what true Christian faith really looks like.

Excellent and Convicting

If you want to feel good about your current Christian walk and who you are, do not bother listening to this book, but if you are interested in being convicted of the shallowness of your “Christian” hospitality, by all means listen to this excellent book. While I don’t necessarily agree with every aspect of her focus of hospitality , I feel like true Christian hospitality has been a lost art and Mrs. Butterfield has done an excellent job in describing and putting into action what it truly is. In today’s world, the hospitality at the Butterfield’s house is shocking, but if Christians, myself included, practiced what the Bible teaches, it would certainly be ordinary. Prepare yourself to either be incensed with her “out of this world” demands or to come out with a new vision and purpose in serving the LORD through hospitality.

Wasn’t what I was expecting, but still good

This is an excellent series of memoirs by Mrs. Butterfield. Hearing her story and the stories of others was immensely encouraging, and sometimes helpful for doing hospitality in my own context, but there was a lack of practicality to it. I guess I was looking for more of a “how” kind of book than a “why” or “what.” So that is more on me than the quality of this work.

I would recommend this to anyone looking to hear the story of someone who came out of a broke past and entered into a lifestyle of Gospel Centered hospitality (and all the wild things that come with it).

Refreshing, Challenging, & Convicting

Christ calls us to die to self, to love Him in obedience and self sacrifice, yet somehow we miss this or worse ignore it. Seeing God's love manifest in the Butterfield's hospitality is refreshing, putting a desire to implement it my own life (and I have but nowhere to where they are)! Challenging because it is not something that I've thought a lot about and so I found myself wondering does this apply to every Christian in this sort of way? Maybe not in the exact form but it does apply! Convicting because I many times when I was bound to get mad or upset, it was because I saw being selfish and greedy with my time! my only criticism of the work is it was sometimes a bit long winded with its descriptive prose. In the end, the criticism is minor and it is almost paradoxical that a book that I had very strong emotional response both good and bad would get five stars but this is because it didn't affirm where I already was, it challenged me to greater obedience.

Best book of the year

This is transforming how we do life and think about our neighbors. The fact that the author herself reads it is powerful. Loved listening to this book. Can’t wait to read (or listen to) her others.

one of my new favorites

I found this book to be both challenging and encouraging. this book was refreshing in that it encouraged gospel centered love toward the world without compromising the truth of the Bible. Very rare in today's church. I would highly recommend this book

Convicting and inspiring!

I’m so thankful for Rosaria’s teaching on radical hospitality. Biblical hospitality is so much deeper and meaningful than the southern hospitality I grew up on. This book is convicting, inspiring, and encouraging.

Such a great book!

I love the practical examples she gave to hospitality. I am excited to put them into practice in my life.
