Publisher's summary
A shocking double-murder scene greets Detective Inspector Philip Brennan when he is called to a flat in Colchester. Two women are viciously cut open and laying spread-eagled, one tied to the bed, one on the floor. The woman on the bed has had her stomach cut into and her unborn child is missing. But this is the third time Phil and his team has seen such an atrocity. Two other pregnant women have been killed in this way and their babies taken from them. No one can imagine what sort of person would want to commit such horrible crimes. When psychologist Marina Esposito is brought in, Phil has to put aside his feelings about their shared past and get on with the job. But can they find the killer before another woman is targeted?

Story
Nora Brown teaches high school English and lives a quiet life in Seattle with her husband and six-year-old daughter. But one November day, moments after dismissing her class, a girl’s face appears above the students’ desks—“a wild numinous face with startling blue eyes, a face floating on top of shapeless drapes of purples and blues where arms and legs should have been. Terror rushes through Nora’s body—the kind of raw terror you feel when there’s no way out, when every cell in your body, your entire body, is on fire—when you think you might die.”

Both Disturbing and Captivating
There are no words to adequately express how disturbing this story is yet how much I could not stop listening in an effort to try to figure out who was behind committing these unspeakable acts and why.
Lots of twists and turns up until the end…leaving you with only one unanswered question: what’s going on in Tania Carver’s brain to think this story up?

Wish I had listened and not read this novel. Too many disturbing characters as and not enough redeeming ones. Storyline gets more disturbing as the characters are fleshed out. I like a good scare but this was just too ugly.

Good story, pretty graphic
This was a classic murder story, pretty good but honestly a bit graphic at times. I don’t know that the overly descriptive gory scenes really added anything to the story.
Besides that I really liked the detectives but couldn’t stand that love interest Marina girl. How is this whiny cry baby woman a recognized psychologist lol? I am not buying it.
Overall good story, exactly what I was looking for.
