Publisher's summary

Kira Bennett's earliest memories are of living alone and wild in the woods. She has no idea how long she was on her own or what she had to do to survive, but she remembers the moment that Cady Bennett and one of her search-and-rescue dogs found her. Adopted into the Bennett family, Kira still struggles with human interaction years later, but she excels at the family business: search-and-rescue. Along with Cady's son, Jude, and their neighbor, Free, Kira works alongside Cady to train the world's most elite search-and-rescue dogs. Someday, all three teenagers hope to put their skills to use, finding the lost and bringing them home.

But when Cady's estranged father, the enigmatic Bales Bennett, tracks his daughter down and asks for her help in locating a missing child—one of several visitors who has disappeared in the Sierra Glades National Park in the past 12 months—the teens find themselves on the front lines sooner than they could have ever expected. As the search through 750,000 acres of unbridled wilderness intensifies, Kira becomes obsessed with finding the missing child. She knows all too well what it's like to be lost in the wilderness, fighting for survival, alone.

But this case isn't simple. There is more afoot than a single, missing girl, and Kira's memories threaten to overwhelm her at every turn. As the danger mounts and long-held family secrets come to light, Kira is forced to question everything she thought she knew about her adopted family, her true nature, and her past.

Surprisingly good!

To be honest I was hesitant starting this book. It blew me away though! Well written, fascinating plot and look into Search and Rescue and the human mind. Did not suspect the way it would play out and I’m typically really good at figuring out plots. The narrator was absolutely fantastic and brought each character to life they were distinct and well performed. It was a hard to stop or pause listen! I laughed and teared up and had my heart beating fast at times. Really surprised and impressed with this one!

Wonderful Story! Couldn’t wait to get back to it.

What a heart warming, detailed, easy to follow tale! I loved every moment of this audible, the writing, the reading, this book was paired perfectly with the narrator.
I felt as if I was right there with the characters, so real and so raw, it’s almost like you could recall it being a part of your life.
Just enough suspense, love, mystery, anger, and joy. This is a feel good, full of life, strife, and people novel.
Yes, the people and the dogs set out to find a lost little girl but they find so much more.
This is a book I will recommend again and again.

Best advice ever!!

Was struggling through the narration and then went to reviews and someone suggested increasing the speed. Wow what a difference!! Good story but until increasing the speed, I couldn’t focus on the story.

One of the good ones

Despite my age of 64 years, I love young adult novels that are well written! This is one of the good ones. Young adult novels must pass the “get real” test of discerning people whose age affords them energy to be insightful, the ability to deep-dive into growing belief systems, since they’ve not been able to garner a lot of years of life experience. This book, like all of the “good ones” was hearty with gems of wisdom and how to experience life.

I wondered about this one, due to a review I read that claimed there was no way the heroine could have learned survival techniques in the forest in just the 3 or 4 weeks she was searched for. I wonder if the reviewer read or listened to the part where the girl’s life before she became missing was explained. It made a lot of sense; it was totally plausible.

The part that I felt I had to suspend some belief on was the total Uber-ness of all 3 teenagers. But it’s good they were portrayed in a good light. They weren’t goody goody kids or the kind to suck up to authority, but neither were they afraid to use their intelligence.

All dog lovers will absolutely love this book! Also nature lovers. The plot was interesting, too. I didn’t see the twists coming or guess at what was going to happen.

I listened entirely to the book. The narrator was good, but could have done a couple of the voices better. Still, very good.

Decent book, no to the narrator

It's a young adult book (didn't realize) and it sounded like it. Good book for a teen I'd bet. The story is pretty good, I liked the ending. However...the narrator's voice....uuuugh. It actually made me laugh out loud a few times. Like.... she was plugging her nose or something lol But I was a trooper and stuck it out to the end. Didn't hate it.

The performance is distracting.

The story was interesting and different. The performance was distracting because while speaking it sounds as though the performer is over salivating. It was distracting to the point I was wondering if the microphone was being saturated. Otherwise, enunciation and inflection were very good.

disappointed

I struggled to finish this book. I couldn't find one character to like or really get to know them. it felt like a soap opera and a porn star voice with the main character, her other voices were good. the plot did not make sense, I listened to the end, thank God it was free one, or else it would be returned. and the repeat of again and again throughout the story, kill me, and my bloody bleeding heart so dramatic I can't.
