Publisher's summary

In the peace and tranquility of the woods at Pinehills on a Saturday afternoon, a mobile phone begins to ring. The phone belongs to DC Smith, and it isn't unusual that the call is from Kings Lake Central police station; what is unusual is the fact that he seems to be the subject of an investigation rather than taking part in one. What can the links be between a prisoner's violent death in another county, the disappearance of two teenagers, and the highest profile case in Kings Lake for many years? As Smith and his team begin to untangle the threads, one thing becomes clear - they are dealing with some of the most dangerous people that they have yet encountered.

,D.C. Smith to the rescue

One of my favorite series with great characters and solid plots. The humour softens some of the serious themes.

A wonderful audio performance, Great plotI, nteresting reoccurring characters a wonderful pleasant story. Lots of fun literary references and the author definitely has a great sense of humor.

Great story but with misogyny showing…

I really enjoy these books- easy to listen to, interesting relationships, and investigations. Too bad about the way women are sometimes portrayed such as commentary that is often snarky about women not really being up to the job and unhelpful tropes about women in the workforce being sullen and reserved.- maybe a little more research would be good there.

I like this series more and more!

This police procedural series features a wise and wry older detective who has the end of his career in sight. He is surrounded by old colleagues with whom he has some history, and younger ones he is teaching and mentoring. His interactions with them are both funny and insightful, and are what make the series so enjoyable. He is excellently voiced by Gildart Jackson, who also somehow manages seamlessly and credibly to capture female voices. The crimes under investigation are reasonably plausible, not excessively gory (I generally can't read John Sandford or Lee Child), and the endings are sometimes a little ambiguous or at least not "pat," so you want to read the next book or two to follow up.

I love that witty detective!

This is another fun listen in the DC Smith Investigation series. I’m not only knowing more about his past references but knowing more if his character/personality. I find it fascinating Mr. Grainger can invent such a witty man while Mr. Jackson brings DC to life!
I’m buying book 5 ASAP! I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Too many great things to mention

This is an excellent series. The writing is perfect. The characters are so well developed and it is done so seamlessly. The narrator is the best choice for the series also. Only thing I’d say is that if someone was to try and jump into the series without starting from the beginning, they would not understand some subtle details, and reading out of order could lead to spoilers from earlier books.

Engaging story, great performance.

Grainier weaves a complex web of plot lines and characters. The psychological mix of good and evil, selfishness and kindness is at least as interesting as the overt police case at hand.

this is my favorite fiction series

Peter Grainger's writing and Jackson's narration combine to spin a clear group of characters, settings, and events in a vivid and believable tale. I have read the whole series through twice and Grainger's other two series' once, so far. All great in my book.
