Publisher's summary

The lights are on at the Singleton vacation home on Lopez Island, Washington, illuminating the horror within. Scott Singleton, former NFL-star-turned-television-evangelist, lies dead. The bodies of his wife and four of their five children are found on the second floor, bound, gagged, and stabbed repeatedly. The oldest daughter was shot downstairs. And the police's main suspect - the property caretaker - has disappeared.

In her secluded vineyard home two hours away, Laura Gretchell is on edge. Her husband is out of town on business, and the children are understandably shaken. Laura tries to tell herself there's no reason to fear. Then the door handle rattles, and the real terror begins.

They're in her house, holding her children hostage, and Laura has only one option: Do exactly what the intruders say. But as Laura races to find the information they seek, she realizes that the enemies within her own home are only part of the nightmare. Because someone wants to keep the truth hidden at any cost, no matter how many more must die....

love this author

I've listened to at least 8 of his books on Audible. All are great and all are different. Very unique story teller!

The storyline and the characters.

The story is captivating and leads you one way by taking you away from the real villains via actual villains. Interesting.

You never forget your best teacher...

Kevin O'Brien is one of those authors whose books I always look forward to and am always sorry when I finish it. This book is no exception.
This book grabbed me at the beginning. The publisher's summary gives more then enough detail to get you started.
This is a roundabout tale of religion gone wrong. You have con men, hit men, love, betrayal, misogyny and GREED. There's a frustrating protagonist and two antagonist. One makes you want to string him up and the other so childlike you want to protect.
Daniel Thomas May does a great job narrating.

Great depiction of a mother with a family in mortal danger!

I was going to joke and ask why Kevin O’Brien hates mothers - they keep battling against horrific monsters out to harm them and/or their children. In reality, Kevin creates women who turn in strong performances under unthinkable pressures. Well-done Kevin! This story held my interest from start to finish, and the narrator did a great job with a large cast of characters. Can’t wait to read or listen to more of Kevin’s novels!

Futility

I’m sure the police could have surrounded the place silently and saved her a lot of trouble. No mother would have left her children with that creep. Not much fun. I’m glad her husband was not a jerk after all.

Love it!

Was worried about narrating at first but the more he got into the story, he seemed to relax and brought you into the story.
