    "Too Painful to Finish"

I have never had this experience before.

I read the reviews, and there were a LOT of 5-star comments. But I didn't understand what the book was about.

I THOUGHT the husband would discover a mystery about his wife. I did not understand that - on his way to learning her secret - he would be physically and mentally abused, repeatedly, in secret and then in front of their small children. I did NOT understand that - to get to the end of this book - I would have to watch this normal man reduce in size and confidence and personality. The humiliation was graphic and terribly disturbing, and it never let up. Even now, as I recall the first 2/3 of the book, my stomach has begun to hurt. I imagine that this is how one would feel if one were forced to watch a terrible person beat a defenseless dog for YEARS!

I do not know the ending, and I would like to find out if the husband and children escaped with any semblance of a life. But I cannot listen to one more word.

    Ugh.

    "Glad I ignored the reviews"

I read through the mixed reviews on this book and was very undecided on whether to purchase or not, but I'm so glad I did
I was hooked on this book from the 1st chapter and the Author did a fantastic job with a very sensitive subject, I liked all the characters and the book was easy to read and kept me up wanting to find out what happened next.
I would throughly recommend this book I really enjoyed it and the narrator did a fantastic job.

"Story is repetitive and not credible"

I almost stopped listening several times. The story repeated itself over and over and really did not make realistic sense. The reader was very very good. Clear at all times. Not his fault the story was so badly written.

    "A waste of my life."
What would have made A Suitable Lie better?

    Not to have been written.

What will your next listen be?

    I am trying Small Face

Would you be willing to try another one of Steven Cree’s performances?

    No

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Total disappointment.

    Any additional comments?

It was like Coronation Street on a very bad day, and I have not seen Coronation Street since I was 11, some 61 years ago. It was nothing like the write-up, it was just utter foolishness writ large. I gave up after an hour and a half of it.

    "A tough, but excellent book!"
    Any additional comments?

This is an extremely good fictional story of one mans struggle as a victim of domestic violence. The issues the main protagonist stuggles with are spot on. At times, I found it genuinely heart wrenching to listen to, and I am no softie in the face of graphic descriptions. Despite this, I should say that it was never gratuitous it describing violence. This is my first book by this author, but it certainly won't be my last. The characters here are well drawn and the story (which is rich with characters and context) zipped along, being so well written that there is not a moment of padding. I did accuracy guess who may have 'done it (no revealing of what 'it' is), but I was not at all sure, and I did not see other twists and turns coming. Steven Cree's narration is also excellent. I highly recommend this book.

    "Ring of truth"

This was a difficult listen but there was an authentic tone to Andy's problems with Anna. It was very well narrated but I thought the ending was rather contrived although overall a good listen.

    "Monotony"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

It could have been completely rewritten by a different author.

Would you ever listen to anything by Michael J. Malone again?

    Probably not

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I am not sure if this this colourless reading was deliberate to match the monotony of the story or if this is the narrator's normal voice

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Sleepiness and sighs.

    "Domestic abuse noir"

A very realistic, greatly disturbing account of domestic violence that will stay with you for a long time after finishing the novel. I found the reasoning why the abuser should get away with everything and not be reported quite scary. This must be how many of the ill-treated people excuse their partner's actions and the thought of this going on behind closed doors more often than can be imagined is a very frightening aspect of married life.
It's an incredible book that I can't recommend highly enough!
Steven Cree is definitely a suitable narrator for this book!

    "Long and drawn out"

Wanders a lot, failed to engage with me and therefore I had no concern or interest in what happened to the characters.
Could have been written a lot tighter, the plot moved on faster and there could have been some twists...... but there weren't. It had promise but failed to deliver.

    "Very good"

First time I have come across this author's work. Astonishingly well-written and (for a native Scot) excellent narration and a plot with more twists and turns than a twisty-turny thing.

    Highly recommended.

"Started off well then floundered with repetition"
    Any additional comments?

I thought the underlying main issue of the book was worth exploring but there just wasn't enough of a story there to keep it going and it just spiralled off at the end into something that was really quite weak. I enjoyed the first part of the book but then by the middle found it prone to repetition and side stories that really didn't need to be there. Some of the relationships weren't developed enough. Found the narrator's attempts at pretending to be a wee Scottish boy really irritating.

    "Not for me"

The author had drawn such a weak, pathetic and stupid lead character that I wanted to throttle him myself. There are no surprises; everything is telegraphed early on to such a degree I worked out the plot by the first half of the book. Given the serious subject matter, I can't help but feel that a more nuanced writer and one who cares about the finer details of a plot would have done the book more justice.
