It is 200 years since the deity known as the Absolved went mad and destroyed the Kingdom of Alnachim, transforming it into the Execration, a blasted wasteland filled with nameless terrors. Vaelin Al Sorna is a living legend, his name known across the Realm. It was his leadership that overthrew empires, his blade that won hard-fought battles - and his sacrifice that defeated an evil more terrifying than anything the world had ever seen. He won titles aplenty, only to cast aside his earned glory for a quiet life in the Realm's northern reaches. Yet whispers have come from across the sea - rumours of an army called the Steel Horde, led by a man who believes himself a god.

Publisher's summary
“The Faith requires all we have.”
New York Times best-selling author Anthony Ryan returns to the Raven’s Shadow world in this prequel novella set 10 years before the events in Blood Song.
For decades, the brothers of the Sixth Order have fought a savage war against the Lonak clans amid the frozen peaks of their dominion.
When word reaches the North of a fresh outbreak of the dreaded Red Hand, Brother Sollis, the finest swordsman in the Order, leads a small band to a long-abandoned castle in search of a potential cure but discovers a far greater threat lurking in the mountains.
Enemies become allies as Sollis leads an increasingly desperate fight against an inhuman enemy steeped in the power of the Dark.
"Brilliantly written.... Anyone who has read Blood Song will adore this." (Fantasy Book Review)

Story
The humans have no magic and are hunted for sport, but that is about to change. War is coming.... The Sun Dragon spawned nine lesser dragons which devoured their parent for the power the elder possessed. These young dragons fought for choice bits of the Sun Dragon, but each only managed to eat a portion, thus giving them specific powers. Over time, these foul dragons were hunted down and slain by heroes of old.

Great Prequel
Sollis and his "brothers of the Sixth Order" take an impossible mission to find a cure for the Red Hand, a deadly plague. Once confronted with all manner of beasts, controlled by the Dark, they come upon a Shaman Woman who has some answers. The struggle against the Dark is brutal and there are great losses. What is to become of Sollis and his brothers? Looking forward to listening to Blood Song, which I have already purchased!

Great entry to the Raven’s Shadow series
With familiar characters, jumping back into the fray is entertaining and leaves you hungry for more. If you are a fan of the storyline from Bloodsong, Tower Lord, and Queen of Fire you will enjoy this adventure with the Brothers from the Sixth Order.
I would love if Anthony Ryan gave this sort of treatment to our favorite Brothers who accompanied our hero through his journey, giving a bit more depth to who they were.

Stand alone Stand out
If you are a fan of the Ravens Shadow Trilogy this will not disappoint. Adds depths to characters you already know that will leave you dying to reread the trilogy just to get another taste of them. Worth every cent. Highly recommended.

Great short book.
Terrific narration. Never read a book in this series, just bought this on sale. Will check out the series now.
