Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school...again. No matter how hard he tries, he can't seem to stay out of trouble. But can he really be expected to stand by and watch while a bully picks on his scrawny best friend? Or not defend himself against his pre-algebra teacher when she turns into a monster and tries to kill him? Of course, no one believes Percy about the monster incident; he's not even sure he believes himself.

Hansel and Gretel walk out of their own story and into eight other classic Grimm (and Grimm-inspired) fairy tales. An irreverent, witty narrator leads us through encounters with witches, warlocks, dragons, and the devil himself. As the siblings roam a forest brimming with menacing foes, they learn the true story behind the famous tales, as well as how to take charge of their destinies and create their own happily ever after. Emmy was a good girl—too good, perhaps. The rat, whose cage sat on the counter next to Emmy’s desk, was not so good. On the other hand, he was the only one in Emmy’s class who would talk to her. The rest of the kids barely knew she existed. Even her teacher didn’t seem to know she was there! Only her nanny, the lovely-but-sinister Miss Barmy, really pays her much attention.

Story
When a banished witch falls in love with the legendary trickster Loki, she risks the wrath of the gods in this moving, subversive debut novel that reimagines Norse mythology. Angrboda’s story begins where most witches' tales end: with a burning. A punishment from Odin for refusing to provide him with knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into the farthest reaches of a remote forest. There she is found by a man who reveals himself to be Loki, and her initial distrust of him transforms into a deep and abiding love.

Great Young Audience Read/Listen
In all honesty, I'm probably a bit old for these books, but I love them. The writing is superb and the narrator does a good job. I keep my fun reading within the fantasy genre about 80%of the time. This is a perfect series to use as a quick read or listen between longer books. The story is well thought out and not as predictable as you think. The characters are fun, witty, and relatable. I love it when an author can take known fairytale characters and make them his own. I'd highly recommend this whole series.

Excellent Second
I am just continually fascinated in how Buckley is able to use different aspects of fairy tales and incorporate them into this exciting world. I never would have thought that the Little Match Girl would be used in a story let alone that her matches could be used in such a unique matter. Alice in Wonderland's Jabberwockey comes into play when you would least expect it. And Red Riding Hood? Goodness, you'll just have to find out.
Again, Sabrina and Daphne are just fun to read about. I like how Daphne is super perceptive and how Sabrina has to learn how to better manage her anger. Also, Puck is a blast. This is a great second book for the series.

Tied with the Riordan books as son's favorites
What made the experience of listening to The Sisters Grimm the most enjoyable?
My son can't put these books down, and eagerly waited for the next installment. Other than the Riordan series, I haven't seen him that anxious to get the next book downloaded.
What did you like best about this story?
All of the allusions to fairy tales and other well-known stories.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
My 12 year old came close -- certainly was anxious each evening (our time to listen to books on tape) to get this playing.
Any additional comments?
From an adult perspective I didn't love this series as much as my son -- but I would definitely recommend it to kids in his age group.
