Publisher's Summary

Taran dreams of adventure, but nothing exciting ever happens to an Assistant Pig-Keeper, until his pig runs away. A chase through the woods leads Taran far from home and into great danger, for evil prowls the land of Prydain. With a collection of strange and wonderful friends whom he meets on his journey, Taran finds himself fighting so that good may triumph over evil, and so that his beloved home will not fall to a diabolical fiend.

    "Wonderful Fantasy Series"

The Prydain Chronicles was one of my favorite fantasy series as a child. I decided to listen to it again largely out of nostalgia. The story incorporates many old Welsh myths to weave an exciting fantasy world that centers on a boy who dreams of accomplishing big deeds but learns both humanity and courage.

This book might be a bit scary for very young children but most ages 7 and up will enjoy the magic and adventure.

My only complaint is that after buying this, I discovered that there was an option to buy book 1 and book 2 in the series together as one book, so it ended up costing me an extra credit to get the entire series.

"Important lessons learned for young ones"

My 9 year old chose this book from her reading list this summer and to my surprise became one of our families favorite. This book teaches some very important lessons about growing up and learning to find ones own identity in a world that when young seems so large and exciting, but when the time comes to step outside ones comfort zone only makes us realize there is no place like home.

    "Good, brave fun!"

My kids (girl-11yr & boy-9yr) and I enjoyed this book a lot. It was a little slow starting and the names were confusing at first, but it got moving and was a lot of fun. Taran (main character) gives hope to the average-feeling person. Bravery often comes in small packages. We're ready for the next book in the series.

"One of the most underrated stories of our time."

My mom read this book to me when I was a kid and never forgot about it. If you like Star Wars, J.R.R. Tolkein, Harry Potter etc. you MUST read this book.
I can't believe I never hear anyone talk about it.
This is my second time reading it, and as soon as I stared it, I couldn't stop. The story and the characters are exciting and smart.

"One of my favorites from childhood."

Brought back the memories and it was wonderful to let someone else do the reading this time. He definitely pronounced the names better than I do.
    Wonderful story and series.

"Re-read as adult, and still loved it!"

I finished the entire series this week. Reminded me of the magic of childhood. Each book becomes a bit more mature and dark. The middle books were a bit drawn out, but The Book of Three and The High King are fantastic!!

    Story
"Rough start but it gets better"

The archaic writing style that begins the book went on for far too long and mutated from scene-setting to irritating. Combined with a protagonist that's equally irritating and dis-likable, I nearly gave up on this book. But the characters of Gurgi and especially Eilonwy really rescued the book. The caricature of Fflewddur Fflam was a bit flat and trite, but palatable. Eventually Taran becomes less of an idiotic jerk and the story becomes digestible. The plot was pedestrian and cliched, so it was the delightful dialogue from Eilonwy that kept me from abandoning ship. And some credit goes to the narrator for bringing her and the others to life. I definitely got the impression that the author matured and refined his writing as he progressed through the story. So I'll probably try the next book in the hopes that theory is correct, and in the hopes of getting more Eilonwy than Taran.
