For a decade, Darrow led a revolution against the corrupt color-coded Society. Now, outlawed by the very Republic he founded, he wages a rogue war on Mercury in hopes that he can still salvage the dream of Eo. But as he leaves death and destruction in his wake, is he still the hero who broke the chains? Or will another legend rise to take his place?

Lysander au Lune, the heir in exile, has returned to the Core. Determined to bring peace back to mankind at the edge of his sword, he must overcome or unite the treacherous Gold families of the Core and face down Darrow over the skies of war-torn Mercury.

But theirs are not the only fates hanging in the balance.

On Luna, Mustang, Sovereign of the Republic, campaigns to unite the Republic behind her husband. Beset by political and criminal enemies, can she outwit her opponents in time to save him?

Once a Red refugee, young Lyria now stands accused of treason, and her only hope is a desperate escape with unlikely new allies.

Abducted by a new threat to the Republic, Pax and Electra, the children of Darrow and Sevro, must trust in Ephraim, a thief, for their salvation - and Ephraim must look to them for his chance at redemption.

As alliances shift, break, and re-form - and power is seized, lost, and reclaimed - every player is at risk in a game of conquest that could turn the Rising into a new Dark Age.

After four books, they’ve somehow gotten narrators that pronounce names, places and world specific vocabulary extremely differently. It’s almost impossible to go from chapter-to-chapter remembering which name actually belongs to the right character.

Everyone pronounces names differently

If you were shocked by the Red Wedding in GoT. Then prepare yourself for the Dark Age. Never have I been exposed to as much, what words to use, gore, horror, dispair... I'll go with Tragedy.

the different voice actors are superb. they elicit the hope and hatred you might expect if placed in the storyline.

I started off thinking how can a happy ending come of this. then I thought how can a good ending for anyone come of this.

Hard to listen to, and simultaneously hard to stop listening to.

Two thumbs up. I opted for 4 stars on story because even i have limits. the shreds of hope at the end tweetered me on the cusp of 5 star. but 50+ hours of all ...that... I just could only go 4.

enjoy.

Dark Age - dark indeed

The first three books of the Red Rising trilogy were 5-Star masterpieces but this new extension int the dark-side of human nature is just becoming tedious. This is a very long book and so much of it just drags on. Plus, most of the conflict is the result of stupid decisions made in previous books that are not coming back to haunt the "Good" guys who are anything but in many cases. On the positive side, this author is one of the best at creating characters that I am able to care about. Overall, I enjoyed the book (though I had to listen at 1.25 x speed) but I"m really not sure if I am interested in continuing with any future episodes.

The story is fantastic. It’s more technical than those preceding it. If you haven’t read Iron Gold or the preceding trilogy, pump the breaks and re/read to ensure you’re ready. This book, like Golden Son & Morning Star moves... fast! It’s bloodydamn brilliant ;)

Regarding the audio production. Although I am very grateful the release of the audio version and the print version were so close together, and accomplishing that must mean a very quick turn around, the continuity between actors was sloppy. Tim (the OG) established very clear pronunciation for names and jargon specific to this world. So, why would the other actors fail to pronounce the names of characters correctly? That was very agitating. I figure that’s less on the actors and more on Random House for not having good quality control measures.
I’m being very knit-picky.
All in all great work, not perfect, but prime all the same ;)

Love the story.
