Publisher's Summary

The debut novel from the acclaimed illustrator - a high fantasy adventure featuring dragons and deadly politics.

Maia and her family raise dragons for the political war machine. As she comes of age, she anticipates a dragon of her own to add to the stable of breeding parents. Her peaceful life is shattered when the Summer Dragon - one of the rare and mythical High Dragons - makes an appearance in her quiet valley. Political factions vie for control of the implied message, threatening her aspirations, her aerie, her entire way of life.

The bond between dragons and their riders is deep and lifelong, and Maia's desire for a dragon of her own to train, ride, fly, and love drives her to take a risk that puts her life at stake. She is swept into an adventure that pits her against the deathless Horrors, thralls of the enemy, and a faceless creature drawn from her fear. In her fight to preserve everything she knows and loves, she exposes a conspiracy, unearths an ancient civilization, and challenges her understanding of her world - and of herself.

5 star plotline, 2 star main character

Despite the 4+ star rating on this book, I struggled with it. The author's language, world building, religion and underlying plot were all wonderful, but almost from the beginning I struggled to like the main character. I can't tell if the author intended this or not, or how much the narration (which was not terrible but also not great) was influencing my feelings about her. I found Maia so self-centered and uncaring about how her actions affected the others around her that by about 3/4 of the way through I just wanted the book to end so I could stop listening to the monologue about how right she was. I am a dragon-book lover since reading Anne McCaffrey's Pern series in elementary school, so I was also disappointed by the way the dragons were represented, which felt like a kind of meld between a pet and a horse. Bottom line, I would suggest getting this book from the library before spending a credit or $ on it.

Pretty good

The book was overall good. Beginning is hard to get through and you get flooded with characters right out of the gate. if you can get past the intro and into the story, it's a pretty good book.

Disappointing

Another example of a story line that could have been great being ruined by an author who has forgotten that they are simply writing a fantasy novel.... this author appears to believe that combing a treatise (sp?) on the evils of formal religion could be woven into this novel ... and it can't ... and what is more -- shouldn't.

Not amazing, but very entertaining

Any additional comments?

If you're looking for an entertaining and fun fantasy book about dragons, this is a solid choice. My biggest complaint was that main character follows a "female hero doesn't know she's special or valued because of unconvincing self-induced insecurities, but through MANY tears she finally finds confidence after all" trope, which I found tiresome and sometimes bizarrely forced, but I still enjoyed the book. I feel like you can tell it was written by an artist, the strength of the book is the beautiful visualization of dragons, the environment, enemies, customs and ceremonies.

Love it!

Learn to raise and train your dragon in an exciting and engaging way, along with bone chilling experiences and adventures!
It obviously reminded of The Dragonriders of Pern series, but also The Chronicles of Obernewtyn. Can't wait for the next book.
