Publisher's Summary

Jimmy Strong is one devastating son of a gun.

He's gorgeous, stubborn, a dancer, fiercely protective of his loved ones (to a fault), and intense. He can steal your heart with his infectious laughter...and break it with a single glance of his stunning, rich brown eyes.

I ought to know. He breaks mine every day.

Being his gay best friend and college roomie is, to say the least, frustrating. Especially when you've seen just about every inch of that corn-fed beauty, he's worked his way into every fantasy you can remember having, and he's as straight as they make them.

We're heading back to Spruce for the summer. He just broke things off with his latest lady-squeeze, which means I have Jimmy all to myself for three long months of relaxation, bro-time, and kicking back.

Until one night alone with Jimmy - and a reckless, unthinkable move - that changes everything.

Contains mature themes.

Fantastic Best Friends to Lovers Story

I read Football Sundae and really liked Daryl Banner's writing, so I figured that Heteroflexible would likely be good. Wow, it was awesome. I've listened to it twice already and I'll probably listen again. The first half of the book is dedicated to Character Development and kept my interest, but then the fun really starts when the boys realize they are more than best friends. Jimmy and Bobby are so destined to be together, but they have some hurdles to overcome along the way before they discover that. The story is sweet and intriguing and I was so satisfied with the ending. Although I don't listen just for the sex, it was the hottest I've ever encountered in a book. The Narrators are near perfect and I especially like the voice for Bobby. If you like a story with spunky, endearing characters that's hard to put down, with just a bit of angst and an ending that will make you smile, this is it. I feel so fortunate to have found it.

very good read

I'm a new fan of Darryl Banner. While I'm not usually an overly romantic gay reader, I've changed my mind. Seems like so many gay themed novels are written by women, how nice to read a love story between two normal southern boys. Also very little homophobia in the story line, very nice.During this covid period I listen to the books as I excercise. This makes it important that both the story and the actors reading good and believable. They are good in this book.

Spectacular!

This story is so romantic and sweet. I couldn’t get enough of it. It’s so well written with really life-like characters. Daryl Banner is an amazing author. His books are pure romances without the judgements and biases of the real world. Just adorable love stories you don’t want to end.

The text suffers from being in a series

On its own this is the best written Spruce Texas romance to date. Jimmy and to a lesser extent Bobby seem much more like characters than erotic fantasy place holders. For once the ending is efficient. Best of all the plot has a few narrative (minor) surprises in it. However, I could not get passed the novel's connection to the prior works. This sort of (straight) best friend to lover storyline can be fraught. It is sort of fraught here. It's not entirely clear-for example-how Jimmy contextualizes his sexual orientation. But the off-putting factor would be far less if Jimmy wasn't a minor character in the first novel (and other novels). There's a touching Platonic moment in the first novel that gets decontextualized as romance here and I wish the text left it alone. It works better as Platonic interaction. Likewise, I do not think Chambers should have played Jimmy-I'm not sure if Chambers should have been used at all. Chambers is the voice of Billy in the first novel; Billy ends up married to Jimmy's older brother (plot of book 1) earlier in the series. Chambers doesn't vary his voice all that much for Jimmy; I kept conflating the two characters. I don't think Chambers as Bobby would have been that much better but this annoyed me in this context.

Sweet & Sweat

Jimmy and Bobby fall into 'like'. Which turns into love. The steps they take in between are filled with lust and fear. Instead of going underground with their teenaged hormones, Daryl Banner allows them a big dallop of grit, sweat and male determination, as the lifelong buddies bravely peel back their secret inclinations to be together 'that way'. Braver than most small-town bros dare to go, "Heteroflexible" left me wishing that I would've dared to risk everything to be together in public with my own highschool bud.

Great

Both narrators were awesome. I really like the story and the characters. Bobby annoyed me sometimes because he was insecure, whiny, and was one of those characters who talked too much when he should shut up but when it was important to talk he’d lie or give the silent treatment. Thankfully those instances weren’t too often and otherwise he was a good person.

HETERO FLEXIBLE TRULY CAPTIVATING

HETERO FLEXIBLE is beautifully written and brilliantly narrated I was sad when I came to the end. It evoked many memories of my younger years provoking moments of great joy and evocative moments when I was moved to tears.

Highly recommend both this book and it's author

Well, dang! This is such a gloriously feel-good, gay-for-you romance!

Jimmy Strong is well-known in Spruce, Texas for asking his gay BFF, Bobby Parker, to their high school prom. Bobby knows that Jimmy is totally straight but he’s confused and hopeful about the mixed signals Jimmy keeps sending him. As author Daryl Banner says in his foreword, this book is for all those people who’ve fallen in love with someone who doesn’t match your sexual orientation. I could so relate to big-hearted and patient Bobby and it was lovely to see him get his totally satisfying HEA. The banter and affection between the two guys was fun and heart-warming and the story was really engaging. I couldn’t have asked for more. I thought Kirt Graves was a great choice to voice Bobby on the audio, he gave Bobby great heart and sensitivity; Chris Chambers has been wonderful throughout this series and he channeled Jimmy’s southern cockiness perfectly.
