Publisher's summary

Ezra

Partying, dudes, and hockey. What more could a gay NHL player want?

If it weren't for Anton Hayes, my life would be perfect.

Not that he affects my life in any way. At all. That would imply I care what the winger from Philly thinks of me.

Which I don't.

Not even a one-night stand with him can thaw his misplaced animosity toward me.

He says I'm the one with the ego, but he can talk. He rivals me for most egotistical puck boy in the league.

I hate him as much as he hates me. Even if I crave a repeat.

Anton

When it comes to hockey, I'm all about the game.

I've worked for years to be one of the best in the league, and l've done it without splashing my orientation all over the tabloids.

My hockey image is one I've carefully cultivated, and after one night with Ezra Palaszczuk, I risk it all.

He's cocky, obnoxious, and has an ego bigger than Massachusetts. And okay, maybe he's the sexiest man I've ever known.

We'll never get along. Not when we sleep together. Not even when my possessive streak awakens.

That doesn't stop us from falling into bed together over and over again.

I Wanted to Like It

I REALLY wanted to like this audiobook, but even after finishing it, I have no desire to listen to it, ever again.

It wasn’t that the story was bad, and the actors were okay…it just…seemed to go nowhere. I didn’t feel anything for either character, and I’m not certain if that’s a disconnect between the writing and the performance, or what.

Didn’t love the narrator

I had to return the audiobook, the exaggerated fake Boston accent ruined it for me and took me out of the story. I could see myself enjoying the story so I’ll have to try physically reading it instead.

Opposites attract, mm, hockey romance!

Egotistical Puckboy is the first book in the Puckboys series by Eden Finley and Saxon James. This is an opposites attract, hate to love, mm, hockey romance and was my first read from either of these authors.

I loved that this book starts off right in the middle of a hockey game and that we do get hockey action throughout the book. We see NHL players Ezra and Anton playing against one another and they apparently have never gotten along. But after the game they end up out together and when Ezra finds out that Anton is gay as well, he starts to rethink all the animosity as built-up passion instead. While Ezra is publicly out, Anton is only out to his team and close friends and family. Anton’s focus has always been hockey and that’s all he wants to be known for. He struggles in the book with not wanting his orientation to define him.

This one is definitely low angst for the relationship. These two do get together super quickly, by chapter 2 (only 30 mins in to the audio) they’ve already slept together. When one gets traded and they’re both now playing on the same team, they easily fall into a hookup relationship. We do get a lot of their friends and other teammates and even some pranking of one another while traveling with the team. I thought this one was okay and I’m glad I did try this author duo out.

Rivals to lovers story that is fiery, fun and hot!

I completely devoured this book in 1 day!!! What a FANTASTIC MM hockey romance!! I have loved the books I read by both of these authors separately but together they make magic with addicting storylines and commentary that just keeps you entranced into the book! Not to mention spice that is off the charts!! If you’re looking for a comedic banter filled MM romance where the spice hits early, then look no further as you’re in for a fun time with this one!!

Anton and Ezra just moved up the list as some of my characters! They start out as two rival hockey players with opposite personalities that created sexual tension and banter that was off the charts!! Their hilarious commentary had me cracking up and then swooning at the same time! This is one rivals to lovers storyline that is addicting to read as you will love all of their snark and pranks as their dynamic develops! My favorite thing about this book is that even as they heat up, their rivalry doesn’t just instantly change but instead develops gradually and realistically throughout the story! It was so refreshing and made it that much better!! Add in the personal growth that Anton goes through with his sexuality, it all just created a phenomenal storyline and is a new favorite MM romance for me!

Do yourself a favor and get this one on audio!!!! Iggy Toma and Alexander Cendese could not have been more perfectly casted for Anton & Ezra! They both fit the personalities of these characters so incredibly well while also showcasing the banter and joking in their voices! Their narration just sucks you into the story and makes you feel like you are right there in that hockey locker room with them! Also, the Boston accent for Ezra was so good and distinguishable!! If you want to feel the hot rivalry come off the pages of this book, then read this on in audio!!

DECENT STORY WITH A HAPPY ENDING

I found this to be an enjoyable book with good development of the two main characters... Anton & Ezra. Ezra's Boston accent would wear thin on occasion, however, not enough to prevent me from finishing the book. Decent story with a happy ending.

Wonderful Start to a New Series!

I absolutely loved this story. I read this one out of order, I read the 2nd book first of this series first and before I read the CU Hockey Books which this basically spins off from so I wasn’t sure if I’d like Ezra but right from the beginning I adored him. It took me a little more time to love Anton cause even listening I was protective of Ezra’s feelings but I grew to love him as well, and I loved the banter between the two characters and how that stayed part of their relationship even as they progressed to falling in love. This was a wonderful start to a new series, even though I cheated with Book 2. I just loved the intro of the Queer Collective as a whole. Also I have to say the narration was perfect, they are two of my favorites especially together. Another great book from Eden Finley and Saxon James.

Love is love

There’s a fine line between love and hate and that was never more true where Anton and Ezra are involved . When they realise they are going to be on the same team they try to get along they play up their hate for each other and that has the press and social media coming up with assorts of scenarios about them . This is my first book from both authors and I enjoyed Anton & Ezra and their love to hate , hate to love relationship.

Loved it

I loved this story and immediately bought the next 2 books in the series. This is my first hockey mm romance and I can see why booktok raves about them. Great story, lots of romance & great spice and I even loved the drama on ice even though I’ve never watched hockey.

As a queer reader

It's heteronormative, but light fun.

As someone who is queer I couldn't help feeling low-key annoyed throughout the whole story about how often monogamy is emphasised as the only legitimate loving and committed shape a relationship can take. Especially with a character like Ezra, who reads as almost aromantic, or at least non-monogamous himself. I know I've had this problem with these writers before, but at least monogamy made sense with the other characters. With Ezra it made it obvious how heteronormative the writing was, you know? He can just like sex with multiple people, he doesn't need to be damaged and then healed by steady monogamy. The conversation he has with his ex and bff about how they should've known it wasn't serious because he didn't feel jealous and possessive tipped my annoyance into real anger.

There is nothing wrong with monogamy, but the way possessiveness is valorized is often a Romance red flag for me and why I prefer queer romance generally, so I felt the need to write this in case it's anyone else's tipping point.

When your rival becomes your teammate!

Egotistical Puckboy is book 1 in the Puckboys series and is linked to Eden and Saxon’s previous series Fake Boyfriend & CU Hockey. While each couple has their own story, characters do appear and are mentioned from previous books.

Ezra is the typical arrogant, obnoxious an ego driven athlete. Anton is the confident rule follower. They’re rivals, until they’re forced to play on the same team. Ezra and Anton have that hate filled rival chemistry. Juvenile pranks are hilarious. Tit for tat is very frat house, but I loved it. Throw in the hate filled sex and it really was an enjoyable read.

I never used to read a lot sports romance until I stumbled onto Fake Boyfriends and now it’s one of my favourite genres within MM romance. If you haven’t started your journey into Eden and Saxon’s books now is the time!!
