Story
I was born with a curse that spun a violent storm around me, seizing every beautiful and fragile thing that flittered into my life, tearing it all from my grasp as effortlessly as the wings of a butterfly are torn from its body. Or so I thought, anyway. It all changed when they came for me, when they dragged me to trial for my crimes. I should have faced execution, but fate is a fickle and funny thing, taunting me with the knowledge that I was always destined to be so much more.

Seraph Black used to think that she was prepared for anything. She could last days without eating and she always walked away from the violent altercations with her father relatively unharmed. She survived working at the club and the drive to school every day in her mother's rust-bucket of a car...but it all changed when Noah and Cabe came bulldozing into her life, careless of the precious secrets they picked apart in their quest to take over her world. She was even less prepared for the mysterious Miro and Silas, and nothing could have prepared her for the bond. The connection.

Story
Yesterday I was a teenager waiting tables in Manhattan, and today, monsters exist and I can see them. Overnight I’m thrown into the realm of the Watchers, a society of earthbound angels split into two factions: the Shades, whose powerful dark magic is given to them by the fallen angels, and the Lumens, whose abilities are bestowed on them by the archangels of Avalon. They’re on opposite sides of a brutal war, and I only have a few days to pick which side I want to join. I’m ready to choose when the Shades force my hand by cursing someone I love.

Story
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Great Story!! Cons: slow start & poor narration
- By Monica on 01-17-17
Publisher's Summary
“What is the most powerful force in the world?”
Beatrice Harrow was raised in seclusion, separated from the Read Kingdom and protected from the mysterious mechanisms of the other four races, but they are not as blind to her as she is to them. Even before she steps foot inside the Academy, they know her name and they know the truth about her birth. She is one of the Tainted: a mixed-breed creature with the blood of a monster, clinging to legitimacy by the genes of her human father. She is more beautiful, more powerful, and more despised than any other being in the Read Kingdom.
Her life was never going to be easy, but when fate throws her together with Cale, the troublemaking son of her father’s sworn enemy, and Hazen, the intimidating crown prince of the Read Kingdom, she quickly discovers that her problems haven’t even begun.
In a world built on status, there are lines that can never be crossed.
In a time of peace, it is inevitable that war will whisper on the wind once again.
In a land of mixed blood, a Tainted Creature can either be killed … or they can be recruited.

unexpectedly dark but riveting
This book has much of what I love about Jane Washingtons work. Lovable protagonist, interesting potential lovers and a intriguing world for the characters to explore.
This book also has some dark themes I was not expecting. There is a clear theme so sexual abuse in this book in many forms. The book handled the subject well imho.
I'd recommend this book overall however. I don't think I put it down once.

MASSIVE TRIGGER WARNING (&SPOILER)
Overall the book is amazing. The story was alive for me and I felt connected to the characters, however, there is one portion of this book that I think needs to be addressed:
The. Rape. Scene.
It’s intense, and while it’s not the most detailed one I’ve ever read, so far it’s the most painful one that I’ve personally encountered and it brought me back to some really dark places of my mind.
100% there should be a clip of audio warning for that particular chapter:
End of chapter 12(14), events are implied but not gone into detail. Chapter 15(17)is the extreme danger zone!‼️
My chapters are offset by 2 which is why the 14 and 17 are there. Ch. 12 and 15 are listed as ch. 14 and 17.

Trigger Warning+Spoilers
I love this book don’t get me wrong, it was very well written and the narrator is amazing. But, if you have a strong aversion to rape- this is not the book for you. The scene isn’t described in great detail, but it may be enough to dissuaded some readers.

The WHAT!?!?!?!?
Let's break it down. The story was good with a very intriguing plot...But, well. First of all, Beatrice is so incredibly naive. It's just unrealistic. The character and world building was good overall though.
The magic system is just very confusing and the ease Beatrice has with it is also unrealistic. Overall, I just didn't like Beatrice all that much, but it's probably just me. The rest though, it's just amazing. Except for the narration, but you get use to it and it gets real easy to listen to after several hours.
So, in conclusion. Good story, slightly unrealistic protagonist, unclear antagonist, weird magic system, decentish narration, and some pretty touching moments. And there's a rape scene where the aftermath is just skipped over entirely.
So................ Pretty good book with some rough edges.
