Publisher's Summary

“What is the most powerful force in the world?”

Beatrice Harrow was raised in seclusion, separated from the Read Kingdom and protected from the mysterious mechanisms of the other four races, but they are not as blind to her as she is to them. Even before she steps foot inside the Academy, they know her name and they know the truth about her birth. She is one of the Tainted: a mixed-breed creature with the blood of a monster, clinging to legitimacy by the genes of her human father. She is more beautiful, more powerful, and more despised than any other being in the Read Kingdom.

Her life was never going to be easy, but when fate throws her together with Cale, the troublemaking son of her father’s sworn enemy, and Hazen, the intimidating crown prince of the Read Kingdom, she quickly discovers that her problems haven’t even begun.

In a world built on status, there are lines that can never be crossed.

In a time of peace, it is inevitable that war will whisper on the wind once again.

In a land of mixed blood, a Tainted Creature can either be killed … or they can be recruited.

unexpectedly dark but riveting

This book has much of what I love about Jane Washingtons work. Lovable protagonist, interesting potential lovers and a intriguing world for the characters to explore.

This book also has some dark themes I was not expecting. There is a clear theme so sexual abuse in this book in many forms. The book handled the subject well imho.

I'd recommend this book overall however. I don't think I put it down once.

Trigger Warning+Spoilers

I love this book don’t get me wrong, it was very well written and the narrator is amazing. But, if you have a strong aversion to rape- this is not the book for you. The scene isn’t described in great detail, but it may be enough to dissuaded some readers.

Wonderful

I absolutely LOVE this narrator!! I’ve never read/listened to a book like this. It was a great story with wonderful characters. I cannot wait for the second one to come out on audio.

MASSIVE TRIGGER WARNING (&SPOILER)

Overall the book is amazing. The story was alive for me and I felt connected to the characters, however, there is one portion of this book that I think needs to be addressed:

The. Rape. Scene.

It’s intense, and while it’s not the most detailed one I’ve ever read, so far it’s the most painful one that I’ve personally encountered and it brought me back to some really dark places of my mind.

100% there should be a clip of audio warning for that particular chapter:
End of chapter 12(14), events are implied but not gone into detail. Chapter 15(17)is the extreme danger zone!‼️

My chapters are offset by 2 which is why the 14 and 17 are there. Ch. 12 and 15 are listed as ch. 14 and 17.

Just like the CW...

If you like watching shows on the CW, this book may be for you. Overall, it seemed that the main thrust of the story was, "Look at all these gorgeous guys falling helplessly into desire for this beautiful girl. Huh."

Poor quality

The story seems interesting. However I can’t stand to listen to it because the recording is so bad. It’s choppy and disjointed. Which often makes you lost track of what the narrator is even saying

Lots of creativity, but big holes in story

Interesting story, but I believe it’s one of the authors earlier works that aren’t as polished?
It’s Washington’s crazy creativity that keeps me coming back to check out more of her books. But it’s the gaping, sometimes truck-sized holes in her world building, plot, and characters that drive me nuts. Oh well. I wish her all the support she needs to keep writing, but minimizing those holes.
Moyen does a good job of narration. Her voice sounds like an 18 yr old.

Completely Spell Binding

I loved this book. Jane Washington is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers. She weaves a world around Beatrice where each character feels real and the story flows effortlessly. It is so easy to get caught up in this story and I was never bored.

I will say, if you have read the curse of the God's series, this book is a lot darker than that. I believe another reviewer mentioned it, but there is a non-consensual scene in the book, which may be triggering for some. Although that is usually a deal breaker for me, the way the author handled it made me able to finish the book and still come away liking it. I think if you are looking for a new read/listen this is a great option.

Lovely and Intriguing

I’m very pleased by this first book, I can tell it’s more “freshmen” work by Jane but she is still an exquisite author. I love Beatrice’s character although her personality is a bit meek and slow to realization. I still like her as a lead and I love her bonds with the people around her and I am so thankful the king wasn’t quite the monster I expected, see Grisha Trilogies specifically “The Darkling” for potential explanations and examples of monsters.

As always with Jane’s writing I feel backstory for other characters is lacking and I would love more, that and better descriptive elements of environments but overall excited to start the next book!

Better than I thought

First off I really loved this narrator! From the start I was immediately immersed into Bea’s everyday life and enjoyed her as a character. I didn’t want to pause or stop listening to the story and was sad when it ended and then I saw it’s part of a duo-logy. I cannot wait for the second book to be put on audibl. Although I did spoil myself by reading those reviews :/ my fault anyway good read. You won’t be disappointed.
