Publisher's summary

I was born with a curse that spun a violent storm around me, seizing every beautiful and fragile thing that flittered into my life, tearing it all from my grasp as effortlessly as the wings of a butterfly are torn from its body.

Or so I thought, anyway.

It all changed when they came for me, when they dragged me to trial for my crimes. I should have faced execution, but fate is a fickle and funny thing, taunting me with the knowledge that I was always destined to be so much more.

They know it: The five great masters who took control of my life, and now fight for control over my soul.

He knows it, as well. The golden-eyed warrior whose fate is tied horribly and inexplicably with mine.

From the great cliffs to the wide, violent ocean, they shadow my steps. From the perfumed halls to the quiet, dusty rooms, they push my every limit in cruel and unrelenting ways.

Because we all know....

There is something evil taking root deep beneath the earth, a horror growing behind every shadow, a disease clawing into our midst, the end of the world as we know it drawing close enough to spot on the horizon.

The darkness is coming.

And I might be the only one who can stop it.

Great story, not so great reading

This book was a surprise. I originally downloaded the kindle version and added the audiobook so I could listen along. The world is well built and the characters are surprisingly well rounded for a kindle unlimited book. Unfortunately, the voice of the narrator is better suited to a children's or YA novel. It doesn't suit the darker tones.

Abusive Love Interests

DNF at about 80% in when five adult men continued to make it very clear they would continue to debase and manipulate a 17 year old rape victim ensuring with magic that she would desire them and no one else. I wanted to like the world building but couldn’t continue because I was so disgusted by the abusive actions from the “love interests.”

Great story, terrible reading

I almost returned it halfway through to just read the physical copy of it because her reading was so robotic. It was like being transported to Junior year English classes where they have the whole class take turns reading monotonously aloud. I finished, though, and will be reading the next. Just not listening.

New Narrator!

I'm on like my tenth run through of this story, bought the kindle version first. I love, love, love this story. It's amazing in world building and character building. characters, love, the world flesh out so smoothly throughout the whole series.

If you're wondering about the narration, it has be redone by Vanessa Moyen who is an excellent narrator!

This series is more than a romance, so if you like depth more than surface love this is definitely a story for you.

Good book. Not great narration.

The book has a complex world, vocabulary, and character structure that needs to be well understood in order to feel the depth of the scenes. The narrators even middle tone for the entire story buries the intensity of the different ups and downs of the story so it’s impossible to tell the drama of a scene until it has past. This series needs a new narrator before the next book is produced. I want to continue the story but will need to do a paper book.

Just... WOW

where do I start?? I'm not sure if I'm having a book hang over, or just emotionally exhausted. I have been loving Jane Washington for a little while now, and she just KEEPS. GETTING. BETTER.
There is a strength in The Tempest's fragility. Her acknowledgement of what has happened to her, what is happening around her and her fight just to maintain her most basic of rights inspires and terrifies me in equal measure.
There are few things more hopeless than having your human dignity stripped away with your innocence and then being persecuted without the ability to defend yourself guts me in ways I can't articulate.
And yet, this is a fictional character!! How?? she feels soul deep real. Ms. Washington, I both long to and fear spending an afternoon in your head. I think the adventure would be worth the danger!
