Publisher's summary

Lazarus occupies a surprising position in the Gospel accounts. Widely known as the man Jesus raised from the dead, his story is actually much broader and richer than that. Living as he did at Bethany, near Jerusalem, Lazarus was uniquely placed to witness the swirl of events around Jesus.

When Jesus Wept, the first novel in The Jerusalem Chronicles series by best-selling authors Bodie and Brock Thoene, unfolds the turbulent times in Judea during Jesus' ministry, centering on the friendship between Jesus and Lazarus. With rich insights from vineyard owners and vine dressers, the Thoenes explore the metaphor of Jesus as the True Vine, harvesting the ancient secrets found in the Old Testament.

Weaving the life of Lazarus, who owned a vineyard, into the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ will help you understand it is the hand of Love Divine that holds the knife, that cuts and breaks with such tender and loving touch, and that we who have borne some fruit, after the pruning, can bear much more.

Good Imagination

What made the experience of listening to When Jesus Wept the most enjoyable?

Interesting twist on Lazarus telling his experience of life after death

What did you like best about this story?

The portray of Lazarus as a rich man

Which scene was your favorite?

Lazarus taking of sick people

If you could rename When Jesus Wept, what would you call it?

The Man Lazarus

Any additional comments?

This is an interesting book about Lazarus telling his own life before and after his death; what I didn't get was the strong bond existing between Lazarus and Jesus. The Bible is silent on that, but it would have been intriguing to see more of the friendship. Overall, it's a good book

A Realistic Imagining

I have always loved the historical fiction of Brock and Bodie Thoene. This story is no exception. But I could not give it five stars across the board. D. J. Canaday is very good in his performance, but English accents for Biblical characters was somewhat off-putting. Eventually, I was able to hear past the accent to the story. I look forward to hearing “Take This Cup.”

Awesome!

The book was great, as usual from this duo. I'd love to see more books with Audible by them!
I love the narrator also.

enlightening

When Jesus Wept, is a wonderful imagining of the accounts of biblical times. It's not hard to forgive the incorrect remembrance, for it simply brought cohesion to the story. After all it is fiction. Very good fiction. This book left me with an even stronger love for Jesus.

Loved it

Written from the viewpoint of Lazarus, it does a wonderful job of putting me there in history at the time of the Savior. I could really relate to the feelings and emotions of the people.

Absolutely Beautiful!!!

Bodie and Bock Thoene are favorites of mine as a reader of long standing. While working at Bookstores, I recommended and sold many copies of their series, purchased in book, cd and now on Audible, copies for myself and others too. Especially love listening during the high holy/divine appointment feast days like Shavuot, Passover and Sukkot because their descriptions of these wondrous days is inspiring. Peniel is 1 of my all-time favorite characters.

That said, this book and the 1 directly after it "Take This Cup" are particularly outstanding from all of their series. Worth listening to over and over again. Every single time I learn something new. When I first read this book in 2013, I'd begun dealing with some heavy duty disability. Listening in 2015 helped me understand the answers needed in regards to a surgery. Now in 2024, it's still a blessing! With age comes perspective and each time it was thoroughly worth the read. Narration was fantastic too. Absolutely beautiful!!!

Awesome

Where does When Jesus Wept rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Number 1, as a Christian, this book made me smile a lot because it explained things like the author was there seeing through Lazarus' eyes. This book made me go back to read the gospel, to connect the dots, and indeed, the Thoenes surprised me with all that information.

What does D. J. Canaday bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He brought all that emotion into the book

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes it was

Intriguing Storytelling

Loved every minute of the story written outside the normal range of New Testament thought that provided a rich, insightfully different perspective on the story of Lazarus and Christ. Beautiful to hear during the season of Christmas.
