Publisher's Summary

Now read by the author, this edition also includes an interview with Alice Sebold and the first chapter of her new book, The Almost Moon. When we first meet 14-year-old Susie Salmon, she is already in heaven. This was before milk carton photos and public-service announcements, she tells us; back in 1973, when Susie mysteriously disappeared, people still believed things like that didn't happen.

In the sweet, untroubled voice of a precocious teenage girl, Susie relates the awful events of her death and her own adjustment to the strange new place where she finds herself. It looks a lot like her school playground, with the good kind of swing sets.

With love, longing, and a growing understanding, Susie watches her family as they cope with their grief: her father embarks on a search for the killer, her sister undertakes a feat of amazing daring, her little brother builds a fort in her honor, and they begin the difficult process of healing.

This story of seemingly unbearable tragedy is transformed into a suspenseful and touching narrative about family, memory, love, heaven, and living.

Not the best narrator. The author needs to let it go to a pro. sometimes it was hard to know who was speaking because everything was in the same monotone. I liked the story...

    "Disappointing"

While this title has some truly lovely moments, overall it is ruined by the authors monotone narration. The plot is engaging at the beginning but soon grew tiring as it seemed like it was leading to nowhere. Could barely make it to the end and fell asleep multiple times in the middle of it.

"Great book with one big problem"

I have loved the movie for years, so I decided to listen to the book.

Unlike most, I really loved that the author read this with a "blank tone of voice". I found it much less distracting than when one person tries to do all kinds of voices that sound ridiculous and distracting to me.

The book itself was great, but I had a big problem with something near the end that was done by a dead person who had possessed the body of a living person. What was done in the movie was WAY better, in my opinion.

    "Disappointing Narration"

The author's narration is so flat and lifeless I only made it a few chapters before returning this audiobook. Her monotone voice made it difficult to invest in the story. I have now read the paper book and loved it so it is clear to me it was the narration and not the story that is the problem.

"the music in the background was horrible"

I hated the voice, the story, and the worst of all was the music interludes.
the first chapter or two was good but then after that I was like what is this.

I absolutely loved this book. Very beautiful story, beautifully written. I listened to this at the gym, on my way to work, and during lunch.

This book is read by the author with a dull and expressionless voice. She should have gotten a voice actor.

    "Narration ruins the book"

I try not to say anything negative because I don't like to direct negativity towards others, but the narration really ruined this book for me. There was no distinction in affect, ever, no different tones for characters, which made the book not only hard to follow, but hard to pay attention to. I don't recommend the audio version of this book, unfortunately. Buy the book, watch the movie, don't listen to this.

    Story
"Read the book and see the movie"

I enjoyed the book. I read it after I saw the movie which is backwards for me and I'm not sure if that is why I actually liked the movie better. It ends quite a while before the book ends, and I didn't particularly like how the book ends. The premise of the book is very interesting, experiencing a murder from the point of view of the dead victim. The dynamic of the family goes through a lot of changes because of the murder of this daughter, and each family member experiences grief in a unique way. Staying together after a trauma like this can be harder than one can imagine unless you have been through it. It is definitely worth reading, but see the movie too.

As a general rule I think authors should not read their own works. This book is no exception, although Alice Sebold is a better narrator than some authors I've listened to. As good as the writing may be, leave the reading to a professional.
