Publisher's summary

In her latest enchanting novel, New York Times best-selling author Sarah Addison Allen invites you to a quirky little Southern town with more magic than a full Carolina moon. Here two very different women discover how to find their place in the world - no matter how out of place they feel. Emily Benedict came to Mullaby, North Carolina, hoping to solve at least some of the riddles surrounding her mother’s life. Such as, why did Dulcie Shelby leave her hometown so suddenly? And why did she vow never to return? But the moment Emily enters the house where her mother grew up and meets the grandfather she never knew - a reclusive, real-life gentle giant - she realizes that mysteries aren’t solved in Mullaby, they’re a way of life: Here are rooms where the wallpaper changes to suit your mood. Unexplained lights skip across the yard at midnight. And a neighbor bakes hope in the form of cakes.

Everyone in Mullaby adores Julia Winterson’s cakes - which is a good thing, because Julia can’t seem to stop baking them. She offers them to satisfy the town’s sweet tooth but also in the hope of rekindling the love she fears might be lost forever. Flour, eggs, milk, and sugar...Baking is the only language the proud but vulnerable Julia has to communicate what is truly in her heart. But is it enough to call back to her those she’s hurt in the past?

Can a hummingbird cake really bring back a lost love? Is there really a ghost dancing in Emily’s backyard? The answers are never what you expect. But in this town of lovable misfits, the unexpected fits right in.

"There are love interests, big family secrets, and magical happenings (color-changing wallpaper, mysterious lights) aplenty as Allen charts the spiraling inter-generational stories, bringing everything together in an unexpected way." ( Publishers Weekly)

Slow but sweet

This book had a slow start for me and I found myself setting it aside a few times. Once I got through the first few chapters, I found myself enjoying the story greatly. There are a few references to the cliff hanger, and yes, the book ends with a question. Searching the title for Allen's next book, I believe that she will continue the story and answer the qestion in her next novel "The Lake House." I found myself smiling during the last few chapters, Im excited to hear what happens with Sawyer and Julia, as well as Wynn and Emily.

I love this world!

Would you listen to The Girl Who Chased the Moon again? Why?

Yes! It was a fantastic story.

Any additional comments?

This was another wonderful story by Sarah Addison Allen. The ONLY reason I knocked off a star for the story is because the ending was so abrupt! Everything else was fantastic. I think I may have found another favorite author.

Simply Magical

This is my second time reading/listening to the book and I remembered why I fell in love with the book.

There is some romance, magic, but more than that it gives hope.

Hope for a better tomorrow even when today is bad.

Overall, I finished in 2 days even when juggling motherhood, work, and other things.

Amazing novel.

A Lovely Tapestry woven with words....

What a special gift this story is...so southern, magical. The narrator is perfection. She gives this story such life. The author weaves the fabric of this story in the way the best storytellers do....thank you.

Fun and Fantastical.

A blend of drama and fantastical imagery with a dash or two of whimsy, makes this book as delicious as I imagine Julia's cakes to taste!

Great summer listen!

The narrator was very easy to listen to and all the different voices for the characters were distinct and easy to tell apart. This book gave me so many warm memories of my own past like the small towns where everyone knows each other, downtown festivals, and summertime teenage love. The ending was so beautiful and I would not have changed a thing! This was such a great read/listen, especially for the summer.

Two Women Find Love Again! Disappointing.

Using the same formula that worked so deftly for The Peach Keeper, Sarah Addison Allen again tells the story of two women and two men. There is a small town mystery and events are magical. Still, not as good as Garden Spells or The Peach Keeper.
