Caroline Murphy swore she'd never set foot back in the small Southern town of Peachtree Bluff; she was a New York girl born and bred and the worst day of her life was when, in the wake of her father's death, her mother selfishly forced her to move - during her senior year of high school, no less - back to that hick-infested rat trap where she'd spent her childhood summers.

Publisher's Summary
Preservationist Meri Hollis loves her latest project, restoring one of Newport's forgotten Gilded Age mansions. And with summer approaching, she'll be able to spend more time with her Gran on the Rhode Island shore. She has a great job, a loving family and she's pretty sure her boyfriend is going to propose on her thirtieth birthday. But everything Meri believes about family, happiness, truth, and love is shattered when her family's darkest secret is exposed.
Thirty years before, Meri's neighbor and friend, Alden Corrigan, took his father's dinghy out to fish. In a sudden storm, he rushed to help a woman stranded on the breakwater. She was just a girl... a very pregnant girl who disappeared soon after they reached safety - but not before she left behind a very special gift. Now that the truth it out, life will change for everyone in Breakwater Bay, and Meri and Alden will have to make decisions that could insure their future together - or separate them for good.

Wasted Potential
Breakwater Bay had lots of potential with the backdrop of Newport's historic mansions, solving a family mystery, a feisty grandmother and sarcastic teen. However, I didn't connect with the 2 main characters Meri (30) and Alden (42).
First, I couldn't get over the idea that Aldan helped babysit Meri - their families were neighbors- and Meri treated Alden like a combination big brother/favorite uncle. When they started having sex as adults, it almost felt like incest.
Mostly, they both acted so wimpy. When Meri's boyfriend moved to California, she didn't seem to care but still acted like she wanted to marry him. Alden allowed his bitchy ex-wife to tell him how and when he could see his children, as if there was no custody agreement.
The author has obvious talent, so would try another book by Shelley Noble. The narrator was okay but didn't do an authentic New England ascent.
