Publisher's summary

In this beautifully written novel of historical fiction, best-selling author Susan Holloway Scott tells the story of Alexander Hamilton's wife, Eliza - a fascinating, strong-willed heroine in her own right and a key figure in one of the most gripping periods in American history.

"Love is not easy with a man chosen by Fate for greatness."

As the daughter of a respected general, Elizabeth Schuyler is accustomed to socializing with dignitaries and soldiers. But no visitor to her parents' home has affected her as strongly as Alexander Hamilton, a charismatic, ambitious aide to George Washington. They marry quickly, and despite the tumult of the American Revolution, Eliza is confident in her brilliant husband and in her role as his helpmate. But it is in the aftermath of war, as Hamilton becomes one of the country's most important figures, that she truly comes into her own.

In Washington, Eliza becomes an adored member of society, respected for her fierce devotion to Hamilton as well as her grace. Behind closed doors, she astutely manages their expanding household and assists her husband with his political writings. Yet some challenges are impossible to prepare for. Through public scandal, betrayal, personal heartbreak, and tragedy, she is tested again and again. In the end, it will be Eliza's indomitable strength that makes her not only Hamilton's most crucial ally in life but his most loyal advocate after his death, determined to preserve his legacy while pursuing her own extraordinary path through the nation they helped shape together.

Not exactly what I was expecting

The first half of the story ‘read’ more like a romance novel, which I detest. It really would be so bad if there just weren’t so many endearments used. It made for a sappy ‘read’.

The narrator changed her voice for the male parts which I find also very annoying.

Good but not great

Where does I, Eliza Hamilton rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It was a good book but I felt like so much for it was not original. I had just seen the Broadway musical Hamilton and felt like so many of the lines came from the play

Any additional comments?

There is so much more to this beautiful women and to end the book at the death of her husband cheats the reader out of knowing the whole person of ElizaHamilton

Living history

I, Eliza Hamilton is a story that should be told. I enjoyed the woman's perspective of early politics through her husband's eyes, although, it was a modern perspective. I wish I could have sensed a more authentic Eliza Hamilton. I am left wondering, does political gaming never change; only the players change?

Excellence

Excellently woven story, read clearly, enjoyed fully. Written as the wife and lifelong partner of the passionate Alexander Hamilton.

Unfortunate narrators voice

Unfortunately we all agreed at my book club that the narrators voice was so annoying. Listen out for things like “ He Saaaays” and “ She Saays “. I couldn’t finish the book by listening to her but still loved the book.

Great book

if you've seen the play Hamilton this gives a females perspective and dives deeper into the US history and importance of Hamiltons efforts. Loved it!

Fell short

I'm probably one of the few that hasn't seen Hamilton. I've read about Mr Hamilton but had never considered the wife. So I decided to try a bit of historical fiction to begin. I first of all can't understand why the author in writing about Eliza ended the book when the journey for her spouse ends. Could a woman not have a life without him? I had understood that her biggest fights and victories came after his death. Yet, in reading this book I found her to be shallow, uninteresting, completely dependant on her husband to make her world turn. I did give it's three because as far as a light fiction tale about an late 1700s marriage it was ok. Also, the narrator is one I often enjoy. However, as the voice of Eliza I think it only added to creating a character that was happy to live submissively and blind to the truth.
