Note: This title is in Spanish.

Story
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

It is November 25, 1960, and the bodies of three beautiful, convent-educated sisters have been found near their wrecked Jeep at the bottom of a 150-foot cliff on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. El Caribe, the official newspaper, reports their deaths as an accident. It does not mention that a fourth sister lives.

Las Mariposas – listen in Spanish
If you’ve read the other reviews you understand this is an account of life in the Dominican Republic. The narration is excellent. I enjoyed the voice and tone of the narrator. The language and accent was appropriate for me. I understand and speak Spanish, but it would be hard for me to write this review in Spanish. If you have an intermediate level or higher comprehension of Spanish the language in this book will be appropriate for you. The author provides a rich detail of description. I enjoyed this book and benefited from understand life from the sister’s point of view.
The book starts out a little slow, just daily life and such. I almost stopped listening but then it started to get more exciting once the sisters attended a party at the palace. From then on I enjoyed the story. It’s a story of struggle under a repressive government and ends in tragedy.
Things were bad. It is important to understand that what happened in Central America in the 1980s and earlier was worse, much worse. What’s important to take away from this book is the sister’s dedication in fighting for freedom and justice. They are heroines; they sacrificed themselves with courage for the greater good of their country. This book honors their memory.

Book and auido
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, but there I would have to warn that the words from the book don't always match up to the words in the audio. It was hard for some of my students to handle those small details.
Did Rosie Berrido do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
I would have like to hear a real distinguishing difference of the characters (tone of voice).
If you could take any character from En el Tiempo de las Mariposas (Texto Completo) [In the Time of the Butterflies] out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Minerva because I would have loved to asked some questions. She seemed to be the one that took the bull by it's horns.

Beautifully written, and well-performed
This book has always been on my "must read" list, but I haven't had time until now. Listening to the narrative in Spanish felt right since this story of political oppression takes place in the Dominican Republic. If you have an intermediate level or higher comprehension of Spanish the language in the Spanish version of the book will be appropriate for you.
The author transports you to the world of the Mirabal sisters from when they were little girls growing up under the authoritarian rule of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic, which lasted from 1930 to 1961. I truly felt that I connected with the sisters and found myself laughing and crying with them throughout the book. The Mirabal sisters' dedication to justice and freedom made them not only symbols of rebellion against Trujillo, but also as loving, independent women with husbands and children.
The chapters are a little off I must add. The actual book only has 12 chapters (plus the epilogue), while the Spanish audio version is divided into 18 chapters, but the audio does not represent that.. I hardly noticed until I was in chapter 9 but the audio was saying I was on another chapter.. Threw me off a bit, but I just decided to ignore because I had to know what happened next!
