Publisher's Summary

Based on the true story of a forgotten hero, Beneath a Scarlet Sky is the triumphant, epic tale of one young man's incredible courage and resilience during one of history's darkest hours.

Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. He's a normal Italian teenager - obsessed with music, food, and girls - but his days of innocence are numbered. When his family home in Milan is destroyed by Allied bombs, Pino joins an underground railroad helping Jews escape over the Alps, and falls for Anna, a beautiful widow six years his senior.

In an attempt to protect him, Pino's parents force him to enlist as a German soldier - a move they think will keep him out of combat. But after Pino is injured, he is recruited at the tender age of eighteen to become the personal driver for Adolf Hitler's left hand in Italy, General Hans Leyers, one of the Third Reich's most mysterious and powerful commanders.

Now, with the opportunity to spy for the Allies inside the German High Command, Pino endures the horrors of the war and the Nazi occupation by fighting in secret, his courage bolstered by his love for Anna and for the life he dreams they will one day share.

Fans of All the Light We Cannot See, The Nightingale, and Unbroken will enjoy this riveting saga of history, suspense, and love.

"Cool story, would have done better in someone else's hands"

It was definitely a great story, only I wish the author spent more time developing personalities? They weren't very lovable, not that you didn't like them, but it was definitely missing that quality that makes you attached to the characters. Also the guy who read it, his imitation of the girls voices was painful.

"Great story...a bit too "romantic" in the telling"

Interesting story about Milan and the Italian resistance during WWII. At times it reads/ sounds a bit too much like a romance novel with a bit too much pining. The writing is nothing special- almost conversational, but graphic, an easy listen and a great story worth knowing. I found myself riveted to the prologue and epilogue which add significant depth.

The story is interesting enough but it is so poorly written it truly detracts from anything interesting about it. Many of the characters are one dimensional and the dialogue is beyond horrible.

    "Riveting"

I enjoyed this book from the first page to the last. Pino's experiences during the war made a compelling read. It is amazing that one so young could have had such a variety of important roles and experienced such triumphs and tragedies. The characters come alive for the listener; I really felt the highs and lows of the situations with them. I haven't read too much about Italy in World War 2 so this story added dimensions to my understanding. I am very glad that I listened to this book and highly recommend it.

So well done. Certainly reads like a wonderful novel but having the backstory of all of this man's actual life makes it even better!!! Historical, real and fascinating.

I spent the entire 17 hours really listening. The story is brilliantly narrated and I could easily picture these characters on their grand journey. It reminds me a bit of an Italian WWII Forest Gump story.

    "A Must Read"

I will admit that the first 10 mins of the novel didn't appeal to me, but once Pino arrived in Malta that is when the journey begins. The listener is engulfed in the war, the tragedy and the ghost of those who died and inflicted the suffering.

"One of those great books you find so rarely. "

The people in this book will probably always be with me. So will all the stories. It’s a story of Pino and WWII in Northern Italy. Thrilling, fast moving, terrifying, scenic, but really in the end, a love story. You come away realizing you have been there in 1944 with a 17 year old boy who becomes a man, a very senior Nazi general and evil everywhere. A largely true story about real people, beautifully written by Mark Sullivan and superbly read by Will Damon.

    "Absolutely amazing"

I have listened to dozens of books around World War II and the stories it has to tell. This was brilliant. I cannot imagine what these characters went through and the fact that they really did just makes it even better. Definitely worth a read. It was well written lots of description that transported you to where the action took place you really felt like you were there and living it with him.
