Publisher's summary

“Mark Sullivan has done it again! The Last Green Valley is a compelling and inspiring story of heroism and courage in the dark days at the end of World War II.” --Kristin Hannah, number one New York Times best-selling author

From the author of the number one best seller Beneath a Scarlet Sky comes a new historical novel inspired by one family’s incredible story of daring, survival, and triumph.

In late March 1944, as Stalin’s forces push into Ukraine, young Emil and Adeline Martel must make a terrible decision: Do they wait for the Soviet bear’s intrusion and risk being sent to Siberia? Or do they reluctantly follow the wolves - murderous Nazi officers who have pledged to protect “pure-blood” Germans?

The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century. But after already living under Stalin’s horrifying regime, Emil and Adeline decide they must run in retreat from their land with the wolves they despise to escape the Soviets and go in search of freedom.

Caught between two warring forces and overcoming horrific trials to pursue their hope of immigrating to the West, the Martels’ story is a brutal, complex, and ultimately triumphant tale that illuminates the extraordinary power of love, faith, and one family’s incredible will to survive and see their dreams realized.

Critic reviews

“Narrator Will Damron shows his vocal range in this work of historical fiction, set in Ukraine during WWII. The cast is large, giving Damron ample opportunity to use his expertise in differentiating characters.… He smoothly slips from the third-person narrator to a variety of voices and accents, making listeners feel present as the dramatic events unfold.” AudioFile Magazine

“A simply riveting read from cover to cover, The Last Green Valley is a deftly crafted novel that showcases experienced author Mark Sullivan’s exceptional narrative storytelling skills combined with exceptional originality.” —Midwest Book Review

Too Religious

If I’d wanted a bible lesson, I’d have asked. Also found it too fantastical. Couldn’t finish.

Religious European nationalism disguised as historical fiction

I had thought story it was going to be a historical fiction with religion as a backdrop which is fine. But just be aware that definitely story about how European nationalism and religion opened opportunities because their heritage made them deserving of it. By the time the book ended was ready to gag from the entitlement of it all; won’t be listening to another one of his books. Needs to be labeled under religious fiction not historical fiction.

Way too much religion

While I enjoyed the story in this book, the constant hammering of religion became annoying. In the beginning, it was fine. But the last 4 hours was way over the top in my opinion. I almost couldn't finish the book for this reason. Would have been a much better book with about 80% less religion.

Unbearably sad

I read Beneath a Scarlet Sky and LOVED it, and this is as well-written, but i stopped reading in the middle—it was unbearably sad. Of course so many stories of World War 11 are, but Ii gave up on this one.

Simply unbelievable

Beneath a Scarlet Sky is the best book I’d ever read. I couldn’t imagine how the author could find another such breathtaking story.

But he did.

This true story of the Martel’s and their harrowing and unbelievable journey in WW2 makes you believe in love, determination and the power of the human spirit.

Listen now but be warned, you won’t be able to stop before learning of the fate of Amil and Adelina.

Another amazing book that reinforces my gratefulness in freedom and the power of love.

Superbly written!

This book will never leave me. The story is an incredible journey of determination, love, endurance, faith and hope. The narrator's voice is perfect as well. Thank you Mark Sullivan for writing the story of the Martels whom I will never forget.

Wanted to Finish It, But Didn't Want it to End!

Beneath the Scarlet Sky is one of my favorite books and I wasn't sure The Last Green Valley would live up to my expectations. It surpassed them! The story keeps you on the edge of your seat. The narration is excellent. I hope there will be another historical fiction book from Mark Sullivan in the works.
