Publisher's summary

In a windswept British seaside town, single mum Alice Lake finds a man sitting on the beach outside her house. He has no name and no idea how he got there. Against her better judgment, she invites him inside.

Meanwhile, in a suburb of London, 21-year-old Lily Monrose has been married for only three weeks. When her husband fails to come home from work one night, she is left alone in a place where she knows no one and with the police telling her that her husband never existed.

In this suspenseful drama, both women must sort through the secrets surrounding men neither of them knows if they can trust.

Foul language

I truly wish books had a rating system like movies and music, I do not enjoy crude or foul language and it ruins the story for me. For those people who are not bothered by it, the story was moving along nicely and I was enjoying it but had to stop listening it just was not worth it to me. I really appreciate an author who can tell a great story and not have to use filth to convey the characters thoughts and personalities. This is my first review I have written but thought there may be others that want to hear/read a good story without feeling like they are in the gutter.

I have a new favorite author!

This is the second book I have listened to by Lisa Jewell, and they have both been excellent! Great stories, great narration, not slow at any point. I get distracted easily and will stop listening to a book if it starts to drag. Ms. Jewell has kept me thoroughly entertained. I'm about to spend yet another credit on my new favorite author!

loved every moment

It's a long lonely time for me, and this helped me endure it. I'm swirling each day, drowning in all the news. Thank you for this reprieve.

Better than her other works

I much prefer this title compared to other works by Jewell. I listened to this book virtually non stop. If you like mysteries like Gone Girl or Girl on The Train, you’ll likely like this book. Well paced, interesting characters.

Loved It! Pleasant surprise...

Just started reading Lisa Jewell & she has a 'cozy' way of writing. Immediately, I feel easily drawn into the setting, the dialogue and the circumstances. Very engaging without high drama or unbelievable circumstances/story lines. Lisa Jewell slips me into her world, without losing my interest, and regardless of the rabbit hole she's taking me down this time, I'm a willing participant!!

Great psychological suspense

Any additional comments?

Dark and moody, this is a great psychological-suspense mystery with a lot of substance. The writing is excellent, the pacing is great, and the characters are very well developed and believable.

1. In a British seaside town, a bewildered man sits on the beach in the pouring rain with no recollection of who he is or how he got there.

2. In a London suburb, a 21-year-old woman from the Ukraine is thrown into a panic when her husband never returns home from work and police inform his passport is fake and he never existed.

3. The third mystery takes place 20 years earlier, in 1993, when a family's annual beach vacation to spirals into a terrifying nightmare.

Story was good but..

The story line was good but the narration needed a lot of help, there was many many times in the book where it sounds like a recording over the original. It wasn’t spliced together well at all. It was sometimes distracting. The story line was good though and kept me guessing who the man on the beach was.

Another great book by Lisa Jewell!

Really loved the book— I knocked a star because Helen Duff’s narration was off for this book— there are quite a few places where you can hear that she has had to redo audio and it’s really disconnected from the rest of the audio. Sounds quite “tinny”. As someone who has edited audiobooks, it really jumped out at me and I actually stopped listening after only 30 mins or so... put it aside for a week and then tried again. I’m so glad I did. The story is really good— I loved the twists and not knowing who Frank really was until almost the end. I like how Lisa tied up all the loose ends, as well. I hate being left hanging.
As others have noted, Helen’s voices for the men seem better than for the women, especially Jasmine and Lily— their voices were quite irritating.
Great suspense, good narration. Recommend.

good book

i liked the book but the performance was not great. it wasnt the reader herself as much as how it was patched together. at some points she would sound normal and then all the sudden she would get very loud for a few sentences like she forgot to read it the first time around

Book was well read and written

Don’t recommend this book to someone who wants to just listen to a pleasant book. Most disturbing story of a very disturbed criminal.
Frank is emotionally wounded and it hurts to know he may hurt from the wound forever. It is good to be reminded there are good people out there like the woman who found him.
