Publisher's summary

Workaholic insurance attorney Luke Darringer has it all: money, looks, ambition. Sure, he hasn’t taken a vacation in over a decade, and his personal life is almost nonexistent - but that’s a small price to pay in order to maintain strict control, and minimize his vulnerabilities.

But then Luke’s firm, with the help of his cheeky administrative assistant Charlotte, strong-arms him into becoming the first-ever client of the new Dreamscape Adventures, Inc. The new company promises fantastical vacations to wealthy clients, as well as controlled therapeutic experiences to individuals suffering from various forms of mental illness, such as autism and PTSD. They’re a potentially huge client for Luke’s firm, but they need liability insurance before they can get off the ground. Luke expects he'll have a quick little canyoneering adventure like he did back in his college days, and then get right back to the grindstone.

But Luke’s adventure doesn’t quite go the way he planned. Eli, the entrepreneur in charge, assures Luke that the glitches are nothing to worry about, and they’ll have things under control again in no time. Instead, Luke soon finds himself in a wilderness of questionable reality, where he is responsible not only for his own safety, but also Charlotte’s, Eli’s, and that of a nonverbal autistic boy whose vulnerability strikes a bit too close to home. Forced to confront his past and his deepest fears, Luke must decide whether to rewrite history and become the man he's always wanted to be - or whether instead he is doomed to repeat it.

Technology....scary stuff sometimes!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Oh boy...what to say about this book without giving any of the plot away. All I can think to say right now is, it's awful close to something that could be real life and it's a bit frightening and fascinating. I really enjoyed the plot, the twists and emotional roller coaster that was this story.

The narration was great too. Clear, concise and easy to understand. I often travel for many hours at a time and not once did I feel like Matthew's voice was lulling me into dangerous zone-out territories.

Something a Little Different

I’ve been enjoying Ms. Gray’s audiobooks for a while now so tackling this one was a given but I actually had another reason for wanting to read it. Back in the day, when I was in the corporate world, my career was very much like Luke’s except that I wasn’t an attorney. I was an insurance casualty underwriter, tasked with deciding whether my company would agree to insure a particular client, and that frequently involved my visiting to see the operations for myself. Mind you, we didn’t deal with entertainment or high tech but the core process is pretty much the same.

That said, my predisposition to like this book was spot on. At the same time, I was surprised at what the story turned out to be because I was expecting something like a high tension thriller when, in fact, it’s more of a look at how life shapes a person and what forces come into play in our personal growth once we allow ourselves to be open to change and to face our pasts. This is no boring psychological study, though; watching Luke get the benefit of what Dreamscape Adventures has to offer is heightened by a fast-paced adventure with plenty of twists to keep you guessing.

Matthew E. Berry is a new narrator to me and I found him quite accomplished with different voices (including female) and he helped me connect to the characters. His pacing and his dramatic intonations were also good and, for me, he was a real asset to the story.

I LOVEd It!

I loved this story. It was way more than one guy gone on a dreamscape adventure to underwrite a new business… Way more than that. I don’t even want to say what happens because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. Just know if you like happy endings read this book. I can only hope there is a dreamscape adventure number two about Luke Charlotte and his dad or maybe a new time travel business needs underwriting right around the time another their life changing event happens, LOL!

What can I say about the narrator he is the reason I chose this book. So of course I thought he did AN excellent I love his voice and his calm demeanor even when he is pretending to be upset he seems quite calm I love him Matthew Barry is a great narrator.

Interesting futuristic vacation idea!

This is an interesting idea on futuristic vacations and psych therapy. Luke is an insurance broker, whose company is looking to insure a new company that promises dream vacations and/or psych therapy. His boss asked him to be the first customer, in order to screen the company for safety. This story has twists and turns and appears to turn in to a nightmare for Luke. This book reminded me of the 1997 movie "The Game" and was worth a listen to anyone who likes sci-fi!

Adventure, yes! Reality, maybe!!??

Luke is an ambitious and wealthy insurance attorney workaholic with no personal life. His firm gets a potential new client, Dreamscape Adventures (DA), that provides wild and wonderful virtual vacations. DA needs liability insurance, and Luke's firm convinces him to experience the adventure, along with his beautiful assistant Charlotte, to determine if they can be represented by his firm. Luke ends up in a strange reality confronting his past and questions everything that he is. He is forced to rethink his priorities and try to save his life and the lives of those he holds dear.

What a unique and interesting story! This book did not turn out the way i expected at all! With interesting twists and emotional elements, i was wrapped up in the story and couldnt put it down! It had danger and intrigue, comedy and romance, and everything was interwoven in a wonderful web of excitement.

Matt narrated excellently and was a perfect fit in the story. His character voices were fantastic! He really made the story exciting for me, i couldnt have imagined a better performance for this story. Thank you Matt! You are a talented performer!

Overall i would recommend this story for anyone who would like to go on a different type of adventure. You really feel like you are living the story with the characters and are going on an adventure too. 5 stars all around!!

Predictable storyline, but great presentation.

The story is worth listening, nothing is as it seems, save for the fact of the sex of the author.
Enjoyable tale, worth the credit.

Interesting premise, but a bit trite

This book starts off with interesting sci-fi but later, right at the end, it degenerates a bit into sappiness. Overall, I enjoyed it, and it was an easy listen with good narration.

I would also add that the adventure part isn’t really related to the sci-fi part — it is very grounded in reality.
