Publisher's summary

Connor Major’s summer break is turning into a nightmare.

His SAT scores bombed, the old man he delivers meals to died, and when he came out to his religious zealot mother, she had him kidnapped and shipped off to a secluded island. His final destination: Nightlight Ministries, a conversion therapy camp that will be his new home until he “changes”.

But Connor’s troubles are only beginning. At Nightlight, everyone has something to hide - from the campers to the “converted” staff and cagey camp director - and it quickly becomes clear that no one is safe. Connor plans to escape and bring the other kidnapped teens with him. But first, he’s exposing the camp’s horrible truths for what they are - and taking this place down.

Flew through this book and loved it. Hoping the “see you soon” might mean a sequel??

Thankful for the Narrator!

This is a hard review to write. I finished this book today and... I don't love it. I don't hate it either.

First of all, I listened to the audio book and the narrator (Daniel Henning) was superb. As an avid reader of LGBTQ+ YA literature, I guess I came into this expecting something different. Maybe I expected something more like LC Rosen's "Camp" or a quaint mystery that the kids in the story would solve while having fun shenanigans together. Although funny at times (mostly because of the amazing narration) and a likeable main character, the plot had some dark turns that were sometimes uncomfortable.

Now that I've finished and had a few hours to sit with thoughts of the book, I'm sure the uncomfortableness was intentional... but if you're looking for a lighthearted boy-meets-boy-at-summer-camp-and-adventure-and-love-both-ensue, you are not going to find that here!

Highly entertaining

The sass in this book makes it such a pleasure to listen to, and they couldn't have picked a better narrator!

Tone???

There are some things to enjoy about this book - but the tone is so incredibly uneven. Was this horror, dark comedy, literary fiction? I have finished it and I have no clue. if you aren't up for scenes of true horror... stay away. the narrator has a fun, unique voice; but all the other characters are cartoons. I can't recommend to LGBTQ kids... it is just too dark.
