Publisher's Summary

Once again, David Sedaris brings together a collection of essays so uproariously funny and profoundly moving that his legions of fans will fall for him all over again.

He tests the limits of love when Hugh lances a boil from his backside, and pushes the boundaries of laziness when, finding the water shut off in his house in Normandy, he looks to the water in a vase of fresh cut flowers to fill the coffee machine.

From armoring the windows with LP covers to protect the house from neurotic songbirds, to the awkwardness of having a lozenge fall from your mouth into the lap of a sleeping fellow passenger on a plane, David Sedaris uses life's most bizarre moments to reach new heights in understanding love and fear, family and strangers.

Culminating in a brilliantly funny account of his venture to Tokyo in order to quit smoking, David Sedaris' sixth essay collection has been avidly anticipated.

What the Critics Say

2008 Grammy Nominee, Best Spoken Word Album

"Older, wiser, smarter and meaner, Sedaris...defies the odds once again by delivering an intelligent take on the banalities of an absurd life." (Kirkus Reviews)
"This latest collection proves that not only does Sedaris still have it, but he's also getting better....Sedaris's best stuff will still - after all this time - move, surprise, and entertain." (Booklist)

    "Laughed out loud"

This book is a spirit lifter. Don’t let the title fool you. It is not a horror story as the cover might lead you to believe. It is a hilarious walk through times in the author’ s life. I would love to hear him speak in person. It will always be one of my favorite books and I hated to finish it. Well worth a credit.

I really enjoyed listening to this book. The only part I couldn't listen to was the part of beastiality. Sorry, I couldn't bear it.

I really enjoyed this book. Sedaris is hysterical in such an unassuming, clever way. I’m sad that it ended!

    "How He Quit Smoking"

Essays written as David Sedalia decided “to be finished” with smoking. He and his partner, Hugh, go to Japan for three months because he has been told you have to change your environment to quit smoking. His stories range from hilarious to insightful. The pictures he shares of the Japanese people makes you want to raise your kids their and say, “See that. Go and do likewise.” But he also points out that if they didn’t have to change their slippers so often they could get twice as much done. It really makes you ask yourself why all public spaces ad conveyances in Europe and America are so abused and filthy while everything in Japan is treated with respect - by everyone. Maybe being an island with resources forever limited makes you see the world differently. It didn’t seem to help Britain - but they have always had the easy access to the continent. Enjoyable listen. I especially enjoyed his discussions about the hypocrisy of being fined for littering in Thailand and having cigarettes removed from American media. He made some very good points.

    "Different, unexpectedly enjoyable!"

Not sure exactly what made me purchase this book but I am glad I did. I enjoyed hearing his stories as well as his thoughts on various things (what would a certain person consider a dress up occasion). I laughed often! Lots of profanity so I had to be careful where I had it playing which I did not notice until I had it playing aloud at work during lunch one unusual day. I will have to try another of his books for sure!

    "A Very Funny Book"

Although years old, and buying it on sale, I enjoyed the story and narration a lot. The authors wit is a shining beacon in the some thing something. A great story. Thank you.

    "This book sucks. "

Honestly, what is the point of this book. it was such a hard book for me to finish. The only reason I was able to push through it is first off because I paid for it and second off because I don't have enough money to get another book.

"Not Best, But in Top Five"

I have already read this collection three or four times, so listening had a very familiar quality. It’s not his funniest—for me at leSt; I think I will always love Me Talk Pretty One Day the most. But it is a very good listen if you like his humor. My brother and I had bought and gifted most of his books to each other over the years, but all copies disappeared from our parent’s house when he moved out of state. So I only have maybe 3 titles left. But like U said, I’ve teD them multiple times because if you can’t sleep or can’t read other stuff, DS has some stories for you. Also note: this audiobook is not recommended for bedtime help reading. Continued chuckling does not induce sleep!
