A new collection from David Sedaris is cause for jubilation. His recent move to Paris has inspired hilarious pieces, including Me Talk Pretty One Day, about his attempts to learn French. His family is another inspiration. You Cant Kill the Rooster is a portrait of his brother who talks incessant hip-hop slang to his bewildered father. And no one hones a finer fury in response to such modern annoyances as restaurant meals presented in ludicrous towers and cashiers with 6-inch fingernails. Compared by The New Yorker to Twain and Hawthorne, Sedaris has become one of our best-loved authors. Sedaris is an amazing reader whose appearances draw hundreds, and his performancesincluding a jaw-dropping impression of Billie Holiday singing I wish I were an Oscar Meyer weinerare unforgettable. Sedariss essays on living in Paris are some of the funniest hes ever written. At last, someone even meaner than the French! The sort of blithely sophisticated, loopy humour that might have resulted if Dorothy Parker and James Thurber had had a love child. I've listened to David Sedaris on the radio on This American Life. When I found that he had a book out, I jumped at the chance to get it on audio. Usually I find that I am disappointed when I expect so much from an author. I was not disappointed this time. I did alot of walking while I listened to this, and people gave me a wide berth because I was laughing all the time! I looked like a crazy person. Do yourself a favor and get this book. The man is a genius. Honestly the funniest thing I've ever read.

David Sedaris is hilarious. His experiences growing up gay and obsessive compulsive in the South made me laugh out load. His childhod fantasy that he would some day grow up to be a cabaret star with an act consisting of his impression of Billy Holiday singing ads for local car dealerships was so insane that it made me howl and yet, I still believed it. And, amazingly, when he read the story of his music lessons, he sang the ads like Billy Holiday.

But behind the laughter is the reality and sadness that are often present in great comedy. Me Talk Pretty One Day is more than a collection of funny stories. It touches you. It makes you laugh, but you ache for this child whose elementary school thought it could "cure" his homosexuality with speech therapy.

I am no fan of abridged books. But hearing Mr. Sedaris read his own stories more than made up for anything I may have missed. And since he did the reading himself, I assume he collaborated on the process of cutting his work. This book gave me plenty of laughs on my way to work and, having heard this abridged version, I have put the book on my nightstand and plan to read it soon.

This was my first audible book downloaded and it got me hooked on listening to books. To hear the book read by the author gives it a completely different dimension and understanding. I laughed out loud at certain parts (which made for interesting looks around the pool on vacation). If you're looking for a great story teller and a fun read, this book is for you

Not much to add to the reviews already given, but I will say that I found the funniest parts to be those revolving around Sidaris's attempt to learn French and meld in with French culture. This is a big interest of mine (not French, but just cultural and linguistic differences), so it was especially funny. Other stories were also good, but to me there was nothing funnier than Sidaris speaking mock-French (basically really grammatically bad English to illustrate how basic and bad a speaker he was). I'm a pretty quiet person but was unable to contain myself on the metro hearing a lot of this despite people being within inches of me!

Extremely funny
