Publisher's summary

Experience the unforgettable, heartbreaking love story set in post-World War II North Carolina about a young socialite and the boy who once stole her heart—one of PBS's "Great American Reads".

Every so often a love story so captures our hearts that it becomes more than a story—it becomes an experience to remember forever. The Notebook is such a book. It is a celebration of how passion can be ageless and timeless, a tale that moves us to laughter and tears and makes us believe in true love all over again . . .

At thirty-one, Noah Calhoun, back in coastal North Carolina after World War II, is haunted by images of the girl he lost more than a decade earlier. At twenty-nine, socialite Allie Nelson is about to marry a wealthy lawyer, but she cannot stop thinking about the boy who long ago stole her heart. Thus begins the story of a love so enduring and deep it can turn tragedy into triumph, and may even have the power to create a miracle . . .

Beautiful story

Of course I had seen the movie a million times over, but listening to the story for the first time brings you into another world. Having the story narrated by Barry Bostwick was a fantastic choice. He is one of my favorite actors and brings the story of Noah and Allie together beautifully. The emotion you feel as he grows older and tells the story to Allie, you feel the hope he has that she will come back to him. Nicholas Sparks brings such a relatable story to live in a marvelous way. Ever since I was a teen he has been one of my favorite authors. The Notebook remains a timeless classic not old by the beautiful book, but by how the movie brings his words and passion to life.

Simple yet Stunning

The book is quite different from the movie. The book provides the emotion behind the performances. I feel extremely blessed to have both venues and artistic expression of this story. I felt the narrator's voice strongly resembled Clint Eastwood! Cheers to a great story!

Half a great romance

Having read two of his other books, I knew I could expect a beautiful romance from Sparks, and I wasn't disappointed. I loved the first half, even found it difficult to turn off, but the climax seemed to come too soon, and I found myself wondering, "What else can happen?" The story seemed to be over." Well, the second half went on and on and nothing else of consequence ever did happen. He seemed to be really stretching. Worse, the last half was overly sentimental, cliche, and redundant. I'd give the first half 5 stars and the second half one.

Touching!!

My first Nicholas Sparks and it was fantastic. The love story was touching and romantic without being gushy. You rarely see or hear of true love like described in this book. It was very refreshing.
