Publisher's summary

For the past three months, Eve Renner has struggled to remember the night she was nearly killed and her lover was tried for murder. She remembers getting the anxious call from a friend from her past: "Meet me at the cabin. I've got evidence." She remembers seeing that friend lying in a pool of blood. And she remembers a horrifying glimpse of her lover Cole Dennis's face as a gunshot plunged her into darkness. Now, her memory and emotions scarred, Eve has returned to New Orleans to forget the past. But the past will not be forgotten. Eve's shattered memory has helped Cole walk on murder charges just as a new series of killings begins.

The latest murders are bizarre and baffling. The victims are killed in a ritual fashion, a series of numbers tattooed into their bodies. 212. 101. 111. 323. There is no clue to their meaning, no connection to the victims except one: Our Lady of Virtues Hospital, the crumbling old asylum that was once the scene of unspeakable madness. For Eve, it was a second home as a child. Her father was a doctor there, and she spent hours exploring its secret chambers, hidden rooms, and forbidden passageways. Somewhere in its decaying rooms lies the key to a terrible crime, a betrayal beyond imagining whose echoes are now being felt with a vengeance—a crime that seems to lead to Eve herself. And the only man she can trust with the search is Cole, her former lover and, just possibly, a cold-blooded killer.

As forgotten memories begin to surface, bodies are found and each twist leads to another terrifying piece of the puzzle. Someone is watching, planning, luring her back to the ruins of Our Lady and the shocking truths hidden there—someone who has been waiting for this moment to strike. He is deadlier than she knows. For the sins of the past must be revealed, the crimes brought to justice, and the price paid—in blood.

Dreadful

Poor writing; terrible narration. The writer engages in far too much unnecessary and meaninglessly chatter, for lack of a better term. Simply dreadful.

My Thoughts

Great Great Great!
And Cole Dennis is Hot Hot 🔥🔥🔥
Loved the return of the Detectives and their loved ones. Was stunned when the connection between Eve the killer and everyone else came to light.
Woven together perfectly 😊😊😊

Quite exciting

This was quite an exciting thriller with lots of action and murders happening everywhere. However I only rate this book as a three star for the following reasons:
- The story became quite convoluted and the relationships between people confusing
- you had to suspend your disbelief because it was a bit unreasonable
- I listen to audiobooks over speakers not headphones so I found the sexual part of the book quite annoying as I had to rush over and turn it down so that people didn't think I was listening to pornography and so that they weren't shocked. There wasn't all that much sex in it but the words used were pretty graphic.

Absolutely Painful

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A different narrator, a less predictable story, and a LOT less boring babbling unimportant details.

Has Absolute Fear turned you off from other books in this genre?

TOTALLY finished with the Bentz and Montoya series. If cops are really this stupid, naive and gullible, I don't want to know this.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Joyce Bean?

Prefer a male narrator, as Joyce Bean just butchers male voice, and this book had too many males. Story painful

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I don't think so, probably done with Lisa Jackson

Any additional comments?

To be fair, I did enjoy Afraid to Die: A Selena Alvarez & Reagan Pescol Novel, Book 4.

Great storyline narrated superbly

I am no evangelical but I DO wish SOOO very MUCH that Jackson would stop spewing out of her characters’ mouths the names “Christ,” “Jesus,” and “God” as curses.

Love the story line

Keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. So ready to read the next one in the series.
