Publisher's summary

From #1 bestselling author Lisa Scottoline comes a pulse-pounding new novel.

Your family has been attacked, never again to be the same.
Now you have to choose between law…and justice.

Jason Bennett is a suburban dad who owns a court-reporting business, but one night, his life takes a horrific turn. He is driving his family home after his daughter’s field hockey game when a pickup truck begins tailgating them, on a dark stretch of road. Suddenly two men jump from the pickup and pull guns on Jason, demanding the car. A horrific flash of violence changes his life forever.

Later that awful night, Jason and his family receive a visit from the FBI. The agents tell them that the carjackers were members of a dangerous drug-trafficking organization—and now Jason and his family are in their crosshairs.

The agents advise the Bennetts to enter the witness protection program right away, and they have no choice but to agree. But WITSEC was designed to protect criminal informants, not law-abiding families. Taken from all they know, trapped in an unfamiliar life, the Bennetts begin to fall apart at the seams. Then Jason learns a shocking truth and realizes that he has to take matters into his own hands.

Sometimes justice is a one-man show.

Critic reviews

**One of Kirkus Reviews' Best Books of 2022**

"Scottoline just keeps ratcheting up the pressure in what may be her most emotionally intense nail-biter to date.”—People

"Just might be the best book Scottoline has ever written, a masterpiece of misdirection, where nothing is as it seems, and a scorching character study of a man at the end of his rope who's not about to go down without a fight."—Providence Journal

“Explosive new complications in the most relentless of all her mysteries. A high-octane thriller whose hero is tossed into one impossible situation after another. Best started early in the morning.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

meh

Does not live up to expectations total waste of a good credit. To little action, too many unnecessary details, just drones on and on between scenes. The one scene that had potential when Jason meets with the mob boss was totally anticlimactic.

Meaningful and fulfilling

I always find it refreshing when I stumble upon a book
Profanity free and without sleaze. This is a wonderful tale of love, forgiveness, tragedy, and triumph all mixed within a wonderful and dramatic thrilling story. I highly recommend!

Wonderful Mystery and family devotion in one

I heard some say this moved slowly. But, every word mattered in this beautiful and twisting mystery. I know a book is great when I listen for 10 hours and wished for more time with it.

My favorite Scottoline

Lisa Scottoline is hit or miss for me. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BENNETTS? is probably my favorite of all her books.

Jason Bennett drives his wife Lucinda and teens Alison and Ethan home from a game when the family is carjacked and Alison is killed by monsters. The family must immediately relocate to the witness protection program, WITSEC. The Bennetts are swallowed by grief, anger and confusions. Secrets begin to emerge and soon the reason for the carjacking changes.

I listened to the book on Audible. While I usually prefer female narrators, WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BENNETTS? was extremely well told. I didn’t want to stop listening to go to bed and needed to listen the moment I woke up. I think I’ll probably re-listen the story was so entertaining.

I can’t wait to see what Lisa Scottoline has next for readers.

Great storyline

While slow at times was well narrated and I’d recommend. Good narrator. Kept you in suspense how justice works but how long it takes in real life. Good wrap up

Intriguing

It’s a basic mystery of who killed his daughter ( the writing on this was well done, as you grieved and prayed this would never happen to you) turns into something that includes the Italian mob and political senators. At times it seems a little outrages, yet, believable. It’s got a lot. Murder, affairs ( nothing raunchy in the book, just references), truckers, monsters with cancer, and yes, include a dog, and why not? The kitchen sink, too. It’s was good. Not fabulous. But solidly good.
