Take the guesswork (and fear) out of fasting with real-life and expert advice.

In recent years, intermittent fasting—restricting calorie intake for a set number of hours or days—has become an increasingly popular diet strategy. While some in the medical community initially dismissed the idea as a dangerous fad, recent research not only validates the safety of fasting for weight loss but also offers compelling evidence of wide-ranging health benefits, from reversal of diabetes and other metabolic disorders to enhanced cognitive function and increased longevity.

But for many who are eager to try out fasting, the regimen can feel a bit intimidating. After all, abstaining from food doesn’t sound like much fun. People rightly wonder: How often can I eat? Will I be able to focus at work? Will I have enough energy to exercise? And perhaps the most concerning question of all: Won’t I be hungry all the time?!

Enter Dr. Jason Fung—world-renowned fasting expert—his colleague, Megan Ramos, and Eve Mayer, who has experienced the life-changing benefits of fasting through Dr. Fung’s program. Together, they’ve teamed up to write a one-of-a-kind guide that answers the most common questions people have about fasting—and offers a customizable program that provides real results.

In Life in the Fasting Lane, Dr. Fung, Ramos, and Mayer take the reader by the hand and walk them through the basics of a fasting lifestyle—from the science behind fasting as a health and weight loss strategy to the real-life choices and dilemmas people commonly encounter. While Dr. Fung and Ramos explain the fundamentals of fasting and offer a customizable approach, Mayer shares her in-the-trenches perspective and hard-won knowledge as a success story who turned her life around with fasting.

With chapters that address everything from meal planning to mental strategies; exercise to socializing, Life in the Fasting Lane is a unique and accessible guide to developing a sustainable and beneficial fasting routine that offers dramatic, lifelong results.

I've heard a lot about IF but I've always felt like when I would go too long without eating that I get light headed and need to eat with urgency. Because of that, I never thought I could fast. I recently received a pre-diabetic diagnosis from my doctor and decided it was time to learn more about IF. The science seems to suggest many positive outcomes including decreased blood sugar, which is what I'm looking for. After listening to this book, I gave it a shot. I didn't eat until 11am one day, after not having eaten since 6p the night before. When I did eat, it was low carb and high fiber, proteins, and fat. It was hard the first day, but the information on Ghrelin really made me think that what I was feeling wasn't actually hunger per se. I tried fasting a second day, skipped fasting on the third and then tried it 2 more days. At the end of the week I felt solid, not full of cravings like normal and so full of energy. I also feel like I now understand the difference in the feeling of real hunger vs cravings. That was a huge awakening. I don't write a lot of reviews, but even though I'm only in the first few weeks of this process I felt the need to call out this book as a great beginners guide, I do feel much better than I did. I have already seen a change in my body, not dropping lbs yet, but definitely a leaner me. Ready to move on to more information and finding out what this IF can really do.

Beginner at Fasting

This is such a great book for those that are new to IF and even those that aren’t. I found it inspiring and motivating to get myself back on track.

Just what I needed to hear!

The authors aren't joking when they say we doctors had precious little education about nutrition in med school. This may not be as bad as it sounds, because what they would have taught us would likely have been the same party-line pseudoscience garbage fed to laypeople and propagated by government, big food and big pharma. Not only will readers learn about the importance of insulin levels and satiety hormones, they will understand how easy it is to violate the principles of good science and they will understand why conventional ideas on nutrition fail us miserably. You might say, well, aren't you skeptical about Fung's ideas? Absolutely. But what he, Ramos and Mayer promote, makes sense and they have data to back it up. And sure, they are making money on the book and on counseling services, but that's a tiny fraction of what most people spend on futile therapies. Fasting will cost the average person next to nothing to employ it. Shame on mainstream nutrition scientists--purveyors of calories-in-calories-out nonsense--that I once embraced wholeheartedly, for not thinking outside their pathetic little box. Thank you to the innovators who wrote this book. It has great potential to help many people, including some close to me.

I enjoyed the book very much, but the female readers voice is very irritating. I would have enjoyed it so much more with a more soothing voice
