The benefits of restrictive diets like paleo and keto have been touted for more than a decade, but as renowned gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, or "Dr. B", illuminates in this groundbreaking audiobook, the explosion of studies on the microbiome makes it abundantly clear that elimination diets are in fact hazardous to our health. What studies clearly now show - and what Dr. B preaches with his patients - is that gut health is the key to boosting our metabolism, balancing our hormones, and taming the inflammation that causes a host of diseases.

Since the introduction of dietary guidelines calling for reduced fat intake in the 1970s, a strange phenomenon has occurred: Americans have steadily, inexorably become heavier, less healthy, and more prone to diabetes than ever before. After putting more than two thousand of his at-risk patients on a wheat-free regimen and seeing extraordinary results, cardiologist William Davis has come to the disturbing conclusion that it is not fat, not sugar, not our sedentary lifestyle that is causing America’s obesity epidemic—it is wheat.

Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain, yet we know very little about how it works. Gut: The Inside Story is an entertaining, informative tour of the digestive system from the moment we raise a tasty morsel to our lips until the moment our body surrenders the remnants to the toilet bowl. No topic is too lowly for the author's wonder and admiration, from the careful choreography of breaking wind to the precise internal communication required for a cleansing vomit.

Our current language bears the marks of millennia of interaction between humans and our technologies, beginning with the very first primitive writing systems and moving into the age of the printing press, the telegraph, and the typewriter.

Most Americans these days consider entrepreneurship to be a good career. More than half of all American adults will start at least one business during their working life. Due to the shutdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic, working from home became a common practice that many Americans would like to see as a permanent work option. This means that if you’re like most Americans, you’ve either already started your own business or you’re seriously considering it. If so, you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Education can be enriching and transformative. It can also be downright excruciating—even demoralizing. When it comes to learning, why are some of us lovers and some of us haters? Welcome to the world of educational psychology, which uses science to explore what causes people to engage and learn, and what we can do to make learning opportunities more enjoyable and impactful. Spoiler alert: Teachers can only do so much. Students, too, must take control of their learning. Unfortunately, many of us never, ahem, learned the skills to do just that.

Recent statistics suggest that nearly two-thirds of Americans regret not planning properly for retirement. We tend to underestimate the key factors of retirement planning: our total lifespan; the probable length of our retirement; and, perhaps most significant, how much money we’ll need to fund those years in retirement. In fact, retirement planning can feel so overwhelming that many of us put off thinking about it at all until it’s too late to make the necessary changes.

Excellent...
This is a very informative audio book by a very knowledgeable physician which also includes recipes for many superfoods to improve our health. There are also tips & tricks to alternatives for dairy, gluten or egg free recipes. There are also actual medical reasons and interactions discussed between medications with superfoods. Many of the foods discussed can be alternatives to prescription medications for reducing blood pressure and cholesterol for example. There are also kid friendly recipes & tips. This is one book I'd want to keep. She also has a cookbook.

Great information, needs text
As an audiobook, this is extremely short. It was still highly interesting though. I think "How Superfoods Work" is a little misleading. Perhaps something like "12 Foods You Should Be Eating More Of", although I suppose that sounds less scientific and more like a listicle. Also, it's really 14, as Ginger, Garlic and Scallions are all covered in one chapter.
The auther, a doctor and chef, talks about these foods:
1. Steel-Cut Oats
2. Blackberries
3. Chia seeds
4. Eggs
5. Avocado
6. Turmeric
7. Miso
8. Ginger, Garlic and Scallion (the "trinity of Asian cuisine" - discussed together in one chapter although they are three separate foods)
9. Green Tea
10. Cashews
11. Kale
12. Dark Chocolate
The author shares information about what makes each food so useful as part of your diet, personal stories, and recipes.
The problem is, recipes don't work super great in an audio format. If a digital handout was included with the audiobook, I haven't found it. The author does list some recipes on her website, although I don't believe the recipes in the audiobook are included there. She also has a cookbook for sale (it's possible this audiobook's main purpose is to promote sales of the cookbook) - unfortunately, the cookbook only appears to be available as a physical cook, with no digital format.
Still, there are some good suggestions here. I've purchase some sencha green leaf tea to make fridge tea with, I might try making a blackberry smoothie with fruit and almond milk, and I looked up a alfredo sauce recipe made from cashews online and tried it out. I might try out other ideas based on some of her suggestions as well.

Specific and Variable
I'm a type one diabetic with sleep apnea. I listened to this in search of foods that could give me energy without spiking my blood sugar. I found all that and more with these lectures.
Each lecture covers one super food. The foods picked aren't obscure, so they should prove easy enough to find in grocery stores or online. Lectures always open with a list of health benefits associated with the chosen super food. These benefits are mostly the same across each food, with a focus on gut health and fighting cancer. This means if you hate some of the chosen foods, you can fill up on other ones. Lectures then close with several ways you can cook with the food, offering specific recipes.
I found these lectures helpful because this format is so all encompassing. I now believe there's a super food dish out there for anyone, and these lectures may introduce you to it.
