Who was Friedrich Nietzsche? This lonely and chronically ill, yet passionate, daring, and complex man is perhaps the most mysterious and least understood of all contemporary philosophers. Why are his brilliant insights so relevant for today? How did he become the most misinterpreted and unfairly maligned intellectual figure of the last two centuries?

Let’s do the Nietzschean time loop again
In the quarter-century since I first devoured Nietzsche in my high school library, his aphorisms have become rap lyrics, his view of suffering as a virtue is newly chic, and his moustache is, let’s be honest, #goals. Still, I was due for a more academic brush-up. The Will to Power is an impassioned and surprisingly personal course taught by two scholars who loved both Nietzsche and each other—Kathleen M. Higgins and her husband, the late Robert C. Solomon—in a well-organized survey of the philosopher’s life and themes. The two-lecturer format contextualizes Nietzsche’s wild and often misinterpreted ideas about God, nihilism, the Greeks, and morality in a conversational style. My favorite Nietzschean concepts—eternal recurrence and how that can help bring about amor fati, or a love of fate—are presented as the exhilarating and life-affirming notions they are. The discussion brought me back to that long-ago library and to the man who showed us how, beset by adversity, we endure.

Parenting advice isn't hard to find. There are thousands of books on the subject, as well as a multitude of websites. Much has also been written on the science of child development. What's been lacking, however, are sources of reliable advice that bring together the scientific research and its real-world applications.

Parenting advice that’s tried and tested
The opportunity to listen to this course could not have come at a better time. My baby girl is starting pre-K in a couple of weeks 😭, and many of the lessons were incredibly relevant to this stage in her life. I’m not the type of mom who devours every parenting guide imaginable—I’m very particular about what I gravitate toward—but any advice backed by science is right up my alley. As I followed along with the professor—think of that smart, friendly dad you know who speaks plainly—I was able to give myself mental gold stars for a few things I’d already done with my daughter (tummy time, check!) and notes to self to be better at certain other things (not giving up on exposing her to those veggies she routinely rejects). I appreciated the bits of historical context, as well as some unexpected tips to keep in mind, so I know I’ll be returning to this course many times in the years to come.

Grammar! For many of us, the word triggers memories of finger-wagging schoolteachers, and of wrestling with the ambiguous and complicated rules of using formal language. But what is grammar? In fact, it's the integral basis of how we speak and write. As such, a refined awareness of grammar opens a world of possibilities for both your pleasure in the English language and your skill in using it, in both speech and the written word.

When splitting infinitives feels like splitting atoms
Have you ever seen two very assured editors or writers argue over an archaic or oddly specific aspect of grammar? It’s quite a treat—especially if you’re like me and don’t have a horse in most usage races. (With a possible exception being my fierce loyalty to the semicolon, which I will refrain from using here despite my burning desire to do so.) And that’s what I love most about this Great Course: it covers all the current usage rules AND the controversies, making it much more interesting and relevant than other offerings I’ve consumed. (I particularly enjoyed the lecture on Squirrels and Prepositions.
) And while I still don’t have much of an interest in debating the subject, it does feel pretty great to know that I’m more suited to participate should anyone attempt to slander the semicolon in my presence.

Getting it “write”
I’ve been in media for years, so writing has thankfully always been a part of my life, but now that I’m writing my first book—a true-crime memoir—the notes, beats, and literary devices of narrative nonfiction writing are all top-of-mind for me. Tilar J J. Mazzeo’s Writing Creative Nonfiction course is wonderfully and clearly instructive for those approaching writing for the first time as well as those who need a refresher. Mazzeo’s clear and engaging style would have made her a favorite professor in my college days, and I was tempted to find a way to send her an apple.

This is not just another “how to meditate” listen (thank Buddha)
I’m not one of those people for whom knowing how to do something matters as much as the why. For years I’ve known how to meditate—close your eyes, sit anywhere, don’t fall asleep while observing your thoughts—but the why has eluded me a bit. Here, Harvard-educated theologian Mark W. Muesse lays the groundwork for a meaningful meditation practice by thoroughly elucidating why meditation is so effective and important (improved mental and physical health and better relationships, to name a few). He also confronts the notion that meditation appears simple, and is a quick and easy path to tranquility (as anyone who’s tried to sit, eyes closed, and not run down their mental to-do list can tell you: it’s not). Delivered in an accessible, almost folksy tone, this Great Course goes down easy. Now when I start to catalog the reasons to meditate, i’ll only be left with the question: Why not?

Every time you open a bottle of wine, you embark on a journey through a world of sensations. Yet for all its pleasurable qualities, wine can be bewildering in its mystery and complexity. Unlocking the secrets of wine is the key to heightening your appreciation of this rewarding experience. Whether you’re a novice looking to master the basics, an enthusiast who tours vineyards, or something in between, there’s no better way to learn about wine than from a wine expert.

Drinking wine is my kind of homework assignment
I just moved into an apartment half a block away from a great little wine shop, and this convenient proximity is all it took to convert me from a craft beer drinker to a wine drinker. I love being able to pop out for a quick bottle of wine; the only catch is that I’m totally clueless about how to pick wines that I’ll actually like. So you can imagine how thrilled I was to discover The Everyday Guide to Wine taught by Master of Wine, Jennifer Simonetti-Bryan, who is one of only 26 Americans to hold this honor. She covers it all, and even suggests bottles of wine to stock up on so you can follow along while she describes how to taste and talk about wine. And for those of you overachievers who want extra credit, she also teaches additional courses on the wines of California, France, and Italy. Cheers!

The cute, the cuddly, and the downright scary
As a kid, I always loved snuggling up with my various stuffed animals and learning as much as possible about the real-life versions of my plushy companions. While I no longer listen with my stuffed animals by my side (though I’ll never forget Baby Penguin), I’m always down to learn more about the animal kingdom. And who better to learn from than the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute? Whether you’re more interested in the fundamentals of zoology or just want to learn which animals are safest to hug (hint: none in the wild), there’s a wealth of knowledge here for just about every level of animal enthusiast.

Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

A whole world of words
My girlfriend is French, but speaks English fluently. Kinda. It is one of my secret guilty pleasures to correct her English whenever she says something that sounds a little off, especially during an argument :D. But a lot of the time I can’t pinpoint the rule or reasoning behind my sage advice. I have to tell her, That’s just not how you say it.
Language is so weird in that way—it can never be fully pinned down, and it evolves in fascinating and unpredictable ways. That’s what makes this course so fun. By examining the evolution of language, Professor John McWhorter elucidates a cross section of history from a perspective we all take for granted. McWhorter knows all of the factoids behind the factoids, in multiple languages, making this course endlessly entertaining and eye-opening. And now I know the story behind the French word for water! Don’t ask me to say it, though—my girlfriend might be listening.
