Watson ha messo su famiglia e si è dedicato alla carriera di medico, dunque la sua frequentazione con Holmes si limita ai soli casi più interessanti, da un punto di vista investigativo. Ma con questa serie di avventure Cona Doyle, definendole appunto “Ultime” intendeva metter fine al suo forse tropo celebre personaggio, pertanto , nell’ultimo episodio, fa entrare in scena il celeberrimo prof Moriarty, l’unico, a detta di Holmes, di porre fine alla sua vita e alla sua indefessa lotta per il bene.
