Il protagonista è un pellegrino che attraversa la Russia portando con sé pane, la Bibbia, un vecchio libro che gli era stato indicato da un maestro spirituale(starets) ovvero la Filocalia(una raccolta di testi di ascetica e mistica della Chiesa cristiana ortodossa), e recitando continuamente la famosissima preghiera del Nome di Gesù. Il testo ebbe un enorme successo tanto che è stato tradotto in diverse lingue.
