Publisher's summary

Curiosity just might be the death of Mrs. Murphy - and her human companion, Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen. Small towns are like families: Everyone lives very close together. . .and everyone keeps secrets. Crozet, Virginia, is a typical small town - until its secrets explode into murder. Crozet's thirty-something post-mistress, Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen, has a tiger cat (Mrs. Murphy) and a Welsh Corgi (Tucker), a pending divorce, and a bad habit of reading postcards not addressed to her.

When Crozet's citizens start turning up murdered, Harry remembers that each received a card with a tombstone on the front and the message "Wish you were here" on the back. Intent on protecting their human friend, Mrs. Murphy and Tucker begin to scent out clues.

Meanwhile, Harry is conducting her own investigation, unaware her pets are one step ahead of her. If only Mrs. Murphy could alert her somehow, Harry could uncover the culprit before the murder occurs - and before Harry finds herself on the killer's mailing list.

Pet conversations maddening

What could Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I'm a pet-lover and enjoy some silly pet participation in solving mysteries; nevertheless, I couldn't continue after they had a philosophical debate about the morality of war and infanticide. Their participation ended up seeming like a ill fitting excuse for the author to express thoughts that would never occur in a cat or dog's brain (if such a thing were possible. It ruined the novel for me.

Got political

Kind of lost me in the middle with the dogs and cats that have a lifespan of 10-20 years talking all envirinmental and political. Not something I think an animal would have the brain power to discuss history so lost me for a while and not interested in listening to another as a result. Too silly.

Love this series

It's great even the second time around. I think I shall listen to my Scottie more closely after this.
These books are great! Lots of humor along with a suspenseful mystery. Love the animals and how they try so hard to communicate with their humans.

Narrator Speed

This narrator is talking so fast it could practically be a rap song. Having a hard time following.

Good start to the series

I just discovered this series and it is mostly enjoyable. The small town atmosphere with a mystery, plus adorable and funny animals to guide the plot. The only off putting thing was the animals speaking profanity to each other. I chose to overlook it and just enjoy the story.

The animals are the real stars here from the clever Mrs Murphy to spunky Tee Tucker, and my favourite, "the fat buddha", Pewter. Even Paddy the tuxedo is fun to listen to. I liked the delving into the main character's divorce and was surprised by the reveal of the mystery. I am already on to book two and plan to read/listen to the whole series.

Fluff Mystery

What did you like best about Wish You Were Here? What did you like least?

This book is easy to listen so if one is distracted for a moment, one doesn't lose the plot. However, thinking and talking animals are not my thing.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Kate Forbes?

Narration was decent.

Cute story

Rita Mae Brown narrating would have made this book even better. No disrespect to the reader but RMB is really all that. This book is a great introduction to a lovely series.
