Publisher's Summary

Darcy Merriweather and her sister, Harper, hail from a long line of witches who have the power to grant wishes using spells. They've come to Enchanted Village in Salem, Massachusetts, to join the family business, but they soon find themselves knee deep in murder.

Until three weeks ago, Darcy and Harper were working dead-end jobs and trying to put their troubles behind them. Then their aunt Velma delivered a bombshell: They're actually Wishcrafters-witches with the power to grant wishes with a mere spell. Wanting a fresh start, they head to their aunt's magic-themed tourist town to master their newfound skills.

But their magic fails them when a wannabe witch turns up dead - strangled with Aunt Ve's scarf - and Ve's sweetheart, Sylar, is found looming over the body. Ve is standing by her man, but Darcy overheard Skylar wish that the victim would disappear - forever. With Harper distracted by her handsome new crush, Darcy is determined to sleuth her way to the truth. But it'll take more than a wish to unravel this mystery....

An interesting start to the series

I was not in love with this book, however, it was entertaining enough to draw me into the series. There are many intricacies of the world that take a little time to grasp. Fortunately, Darcy is new to her powers and we are learning along with her. Turns out she is a pretty decent sleuth as well.

The romance angle here is nice, but way second burner to all the murder and learning the craft stuff. There are so many interesting characters coming at you. Lots of supporting to keep track of as well as their powers when you learn them. Her aunt V is a hoot, her sister Harper is fun as well, and the villagers are head spinning.

Totally clean romance, no bedroom action at all. Also, the mystery is fairly light. There are plenty of clues to help you solve right along with Darcy. A couple side plots keep things moving along at a steady pace.

Narrator Coleen Marlo does a great job with the read, although there were a few things I did not enjoy. Her pace was super swift, or at least it seemed that way in the Audible app. I also heard hints of a strange accent, her "o"s are very odd. I heard it most prominently when she says "potions" which happens often in this book. It was distracting at best.

In the end, I was entertained and curious to see more of the series. It wasn't amazing, just okay, but enough to pull me into the lives of the colorful denizens of the Enchanted Village.

great book, poor performance

I like the story it is fun and fast moving. I don't particularly like the narrator. She pronounces things funny and over annunciates words so they sound weird or puts emphasis in the wrong place. The worst is when she says the wrong thing, like when the name is Missy and she says Mike.

Narrator is horrible

I have listened to many books and many narrators. Some I absolutely love and will try an author just because I love the narrator, some are so so, I can overcome listening to them because I love the story and get familiar with their style and don't notice it anymore. With this book I had read the story and liked it so I thought I would give the audible version a try because sometimes listening to the story brings out even more detail. I could not finish listening to the book. In fact it put so on edge I stopped liking the story.

Fun

Good clean story. Didn't figure out who committed the murder, but then no real clues were given. Left enough unanswered questions that I'll have to continue the series.

First Thought when Finished: I am not sure where my original review of It Takes a Witch by Heather Blake went (this is a re-read for me) but it was fun coming back to the beginning of the series to refresh my memory of the sisters when they were new to town. Sometimes re-reads are just what hits the spot!

Audio Thoughts: I thought Colleen was a good match for the characters and sassy-ness of the story :)

Book is okay, narration is awful

What would have made It Takes a Witch better?

If the narrator sounded less effected and nasal the entire experience of listening to the book would have been better.

Would you be willing to try another one of Coleen Marlo’s performances?

Not deliberately.

Horrible

There are so many things wrong with this book that I can't name them all. Actually I don't want to name them all because I don't want to spend that much time on this book. I will give a few examples to demonstrate my point.

1. It was difficult and distracting to keep up with all of the crafters.
2. The lead character's mother died at the age of 7. It is then that she decides to take on the responsibility of raising her sister? Really!!!
3. The residents and business owners in the Enchanted Village are more concerned about how a pickpocket is affecting tourism than a murder.
4. The lead characters are just boring. They start looking into the murder out of curiosity.
5. The narrator isn't write for this book. She doesn't differentiate between the characters very well.

I can go on, but, I think I will just move on to another book.
