"I just wanted to be normal, but the day college started a supernatural world opened up. Now I don't know who to trust...or even if I'll survive the night."
A new urban fantasy series from the award-winning screenwriter of ground-breaking BBC TV series Spirit Warriors.
Marley Gray is just an ordinary girl when she moves to a new city to start college. She doesn't know that magic even exists, much less that she is the descendant of one of the most powerful witches to have ever walked the earth. As far as she knows, she has classes to sign up for, parties to attend, and an overprotective father to avoid.
Along the way, Marley discovers roommate Cassie might just be the oddest - if richest - girl she's ever met. Then there's Eve, the older girl with a mysterious past who hides her true face under layers of makeup and a bitchy attitude. Thank God for Tyler, who seems nice even though she's just suffered the worse kind of loss that anyone can.
When a night out ends with them all thrown together for the first time, something happens that no one expected. Something magical. And suddenly, they discover they each have been gifted with strange new powers - but why? And who is the mysterious, good-looking stranger who seems to know far more than he is telling them?
In no time, the girls find themselves in a desperate race against a powerful enemy who - in his centuries-old quest for revenge - could destroy not only the city of Boston, but quite possibly the world.
Can they work together to overcome their demons before all hell breaks loose?
Written like your favorite CW or Netflix show, expect thrills, heart-racing romance, as well as epic twists and turns that will keep you guessing!
Saving the world has never been this twisted!

I have read and listened to other works by Jo Ho and enjoyed these stories just as much! The only issue I had is that these girls find they have powers, truly magical powers and they are more concerned about going to class and keeping up their grades than trying to understand their powers. Doesn't seem like anyone, especially a young adult, would not be obsessed with understanding or learning more. Regardless, I can't wait for the rest of the series!!

Pros: The narrator does a good job of presenting the story and engaging the listener with the character's emotions through tone of voice. The story shifts focus not just to follow the four main protagonists, but also certain support characters and even the primary antagonist (but without revealing so much of the antagonist's specific plans to ruin the mystery). A lot of the plot twists are ones you see coming, but some of the twists are definitely not what the average listener will be expecting. The characters are believable and relatable to a decent degree.
Cons: While this is billed as a collection of the first 11 books (and technically is by the way they were apparently published), it is really just Part 1 of a longer book/story and does not actually reach the climax of any of the issues (main or side) facing the characters. This part ends on a cliffhanger, as do all of the books within the collection. While the characters are largely relatable, there are times you may want to scream at the protagonists for not just talking about an issue so that they can progress in dealing with their issues.
Overall, an enjoyable listen, although if you can't stand cliffhangers wait until the series is finished before picking them ALL up.

Decent Urban Fantasy, only Part 1 of a Long Story

From the first chapter, I was absolutely engulfed by the captivating narrative and incredible storyline.
I felt like I was watching the story play out as if I was just laying on my couch binging it on Netflix! (Which absolutely needs to happen, btw.)
If you’ve looked at this book and been on the fence about it, take the leap... it’s well worth it!
This NEEDS to be made into a TV show!

The narrator does an impeccable job in this series of performances and really does the author's work justice. I would definitely listen to other performances by her and am incredibly impressed with her ability to bring each of these characters to life. I'm sure it was difficult to keep each of the girls voices differentiated and occasionally it is a little difficult to distinguish who is talking or who's point of view we are in but this is rarely an issue and it's only momentarily because the author does a great job distinguishing each of the girl's personalities. Excellent performance.

For the most part I found this story exciting and entertaining. I have to admit though, the character Cassie got on my nerves. She was so insecure and had zero self esteem. She fell for the dumbest tricks and just bugged for the most part. But in the last few books she started changing into a person that was way more tolerable.
The other girls were ok, they all had their strengths and their flaws. And the story itself was pretty good. There were times it felt like the story started to stray away from the whole preventing the apocalypse thing, but maybe the author was just setting up some future plot twists.
All in all, I enjoyed the books and I think you would like them if you enjoy urban fantasy and stories of witches and demons. 4 stars
