Publisher's summary

The instant Sunday Times best seller

"An intelligent, thorough rejoinder to an idea that has swept across much of the liberal world seemingly overnight. Even those outraged by Joyce’s positions would benefit from understanding them.... Open conversation about such fraught issues is the only realistic path forward." (Jesse Singal, The New York Times)

"This rigorous and brave book nails the absurd idea that sex is just a 'social construct'." (David Aaronovitch, The Times)

Gender identity ideology is about more than Twitter storms and using the right pronouns. In just 10 years, laws, company policies, school and university curricula, sport, medical protocols, and the media have been reshaped to privilege self-declared gender identity over biological sex.

People are being shamed and silenced for attempting to understand the consequences of redefining "man" and "woman". While compassion for transgender lives is well-intentioned, it is stifling much-needed inquiry into the significance of our bodies.

If we recommit to our liberal values of freedom of belief, freedom of speech, and robust debate, we scan de-escalate this most vicious of culture wars.

excellent and so very needed

A thoughtful, thorough, and logical appeal for a sane response to a radical idea. This book needs to be read by anyone who is confused by what "trans" even means. I suspect the majority of individuals are unaware of how gender identity ideology has infiltrated so many aspects of society and what consequences are sure to come as a result. Educators and legislators in particular need clarity about this subject before an irreversible embrace of harmful ideas does severe damage to the most vulnerable people in the world: women and children.

Excellent and Needed

Trans is well laid out, factual, compassionate and engaging. It is the conversation that is needed, and happily beginning. For anyone suffering whiplash from the cognitive dissonance, vitriolic criticism, and lack of discussion regarding this issue, and how it impacts women, children, societies, laws, rights, relationships, gay and lesbian people, and plain common sense, Trans is a wonderful resource that shows this societal shift involves everyone’s rights, the safety of children’s future, opportunities, and more. It is the first scholarly work integrating current events and I am so glad I read it.

Compassionate analysis of the issues with self id

It is clear the author is not a hateful transphobe, but a woman with legitimate concerns on how the widespread acceptance of self id will and has harmed women, children, same sex attracted people, and corrupted doctors and healthcare providers.

My only complaint was with the sound. The author has a calming, gentle, quiet voice. I had to turn the volume up considerably to hear properly.

Good, but takes it one step too far

I like her history of transgender issues. Yet, while she mentions the need to be caring for those who are trans, her advocacy for social change to discriminate against those who are trans is a little too loud. We need safe spaces for women… true, but we also need safe spaces for those who are trans and just want the government to leave them the hell alone.

Satisfying to the inquiring mind

This outstanding book is substantive and well substantiated. The calm and logic of the hot-issue telling is superb. The compassionate understanding is deserving of admiration. I recommend Trans to every parent, every teen/young adult, everybody in education, everybody in government, everybody in healthcare, everybody in Human Resources, everybody in the activist movement. Who does this leave out?… NASA astronauts who do not fall into any of the mentioned groups? :)
I very comfortably listened at 0.9 speed being used to the American pronunciation, and being 60+yy.

Rational and Compassionate Take on Gender Ideology

Helen Joyce does an excellent job deconstructing gender identity ideology and highlighting the dangers it poses, especially to women and children, but does so in a compassionate way that doesn’t dehumanize the other side. Highly recommended.

A must read

For those of us who had been feeling gaslit by the trans activist movement—like our safety or athletics didn’t matter—this book explains it all.
