Lucas Rurik used to be part of the Raven Guild. That is, until someone murdered all of its members—except for him. That was seven years ago. Now, Lucas keeps to himself, avoiding getting too close to anyone lest they become targets themselves. But when one of his oldest friends at the Rift-Crime Unit calls upon him for help with a case that’s already taken down people who mean a lot to him, Lucas can’t resist stepping back into the fray. Publisher's summary
The hunt for a serial killer leads a vampire agent to uncover a terrifying conspiracy in this dark urban fantasy by the author of the Hellequin Chronicles.
Vampires and humans live side by side thanks to an uneasy peace maintained by the Assembly. As an Arbiter for the powerful organization, Miles Watson is authorized to act as judge, jury, and executioner for anyone—living or undead—who breaks the law. But now Miles is up against a threat more sinister than anything he's seen in his centuries as a vampire.
A criminal network in London is offering wealthy humans the chance to become vampires without the Assembly's consent. When the process goes disastrously wrong, the Boss wants to eliminate any trace of the fiasco. But a rogue enforcer refuses to play along, and trouble quickly escalates out of anyone's control.
As Miles sets off searching for the illegal vampires, he finds himself on the trail of a monstrous serial killer. The twisty investigation takes him from London's deadly underworld to the rural backwaters of the Pacific Northwest—where an even more devious criminal enterprise threatens all of vampire-kind . . .
Known for his terrifying tales of urban fantasy, author Steve McHugh goes even deeper into the shadows with this noirish vampire thriller, which masterfully combines suspenseful plotting and intricate world-building.

Gods, monsters, and magical artifacts…what else can go wrong? The old gods were cruel. I know because the stories told by the elders made it clear. Now the gods are back, and it appears it’s my dad’s fault. You know what’s worse? Their idea of fun is world ending. Now I have to stop them from recovering a magical artifact that will bring that to pass. I’m just a shapeshifting bush pilot who wants to stay off the radar—unfortunately, it’s only me, my friends, family, and the few supernaturals we can round up between the gods and the humans. War is coming. I only hope we survive.

If I’m to restore the druids to their former glory, I’ll need a safe place to train my recruits. Ideally, someplace where they won’t get curb-stomped by the gods. I can’t think of a better place to hide out than an alternate timeline where the gods and fae are too busy fighting a civil war to bother with little old me. So, it’s time to head back, settle old scores, clear the alternate timeline Earth of the undead, and plant some new druid groves.

The worst narrator ever?
This book might have been enjoyable if it weren't for the horrible narrator. Apparently, expresssing emotion or asking a question (especially while doing Scottish or American accents) is beyond his range.
This particular lack of ability begs the question: why would you hire him to read a book about a Scottish main character where much of the story takes place in America?
His slow delivery and lack of emotion made this book feel endless, even when sped up to 1.25x.

Surprised at how much I enjoyed this book
I’m not typically into vampire novels, but when I saw this was a daily I decided to give it a shot. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book and am a bit bummed the second book has yet to be released. Since I liked Steve McHugh’s writing style, I’m now off to start The Hellequin Chronicles and see how that goes.

So much fun with Church
I totally loved every minute of this book. The world starts out with human predators all over the earth. Their predators are vampires. But who do vampires fear? Is there something more that goes bump in the night?

New Series!
One thing that I have to make very clear is that I am a huge fan of Mr. McHugh. I have read all of his series (or at least all of the ones that I am aware of) and when I saw that there was a new series beginning, I was so excited. So, I clicked the buy button without a second thought.
I think that I have realized that sometimes the things that are going on in our or the readers personal life at the time can somewhat impact your experience while reading. Why do I say that? Well, because this was the Christmas season, I had a ton of things to get done, my stress levels were though the roof (kind of the antithesis of what we should be experience...isn't that ironic?) well, anyway, I think my patience on delving into a new series may not have been at its best level.
With that being said, I did enjoy the book. I liked the setting, I liked the characters that we were being introduced to and I am actually looking forward to seeing what is going to come next. Unfortunately, I just don't think I can gush as much as I usually do and that I think is on me.
So- let's see what book 2 has to offer and we can figure out if my crazy Christmastime hypothesis is correct :)

For the first time ever, I actually enjoyed a vampire book. I truly am impressed by the unique systems put in place and the backstory that has been built up. Thus far I look forward to the next installment, and thanks again for a great book!
