Publisher's summary

“We were both steel butterflies, emerging from our cocoons in spiked armor, ready to tackle the skies.”

Beatrice Harrow grew up in a world where there wasn’t a single place that she belonged, but the world is changing. Now, there is an entire kingdom and an actual ghost - with possible bad intentions - under her care, and she doesn’t know what to do with either of them. Exiled and separated from her friends, she finds herself swept up in the politics of her unwanted kingdom, with mysterious forces working against her at every turn.

It will not be long until the whisperings of war on the horizon become a reality, but the question remains....

Where will she stand?

And who will stand with her?

Both books kept me wanting more!

After reading the first book and absolutely loving it, I was really wondering how the author could wrap everything up in book to, but she did!

Really great storyline and some wonderful characters.

Honestly, would have loved to see this character do more in a longer book series and some of the characters who died off, stick around for longer!

I like everything except for the main character.

The book was a very fun read but the main character is frustrating. She is very slow to figure out what’s going on and she often fails to see the big picture. The final conflict was particularly infuriating because she could have saved many lives by simply using a power that has but refuses to use. She’s kind of dumb and it’s annoying.

Started so well. Ended so meh.

I was so excited and interested when I was reading the last book. It seemed like the author was going to show audiences a different kind of couple, a strong woman coming into her power, and keep you guessing until the end. But, in this book, the foreshadowing was more like shoving who the bad guy was in your face . Then, the author threw the actually interesting relationship the main character had in the garbage with a "where the eff did that come from?" surprise, which didn't even seem plausible, in favor of the vanilla fairy tale prince relationship and ending. Disappointing to say the least . Also, I haven't been a fan of the way some plot devices were handled. The way the main character practically forgot her rape was not realistic, all these guys she gets romantic with slam her against a wall when they get rough with her, just like she was when she was raped. But that's not triggering? And the way everyone agonized over her trial and how mistreated she was, was all tied up in a pretty bow after about two minutes. Then no was worried anymore and everyone loved her. Bleh. Not inclined to read another story from this author again. The narrator has a beautiful voice though and I loved listening to her.

Worth the listen!

Worth the listen but I’m disappointed in the story. [CONTAINS SPOILERS!!]Sometimes books leave a bad taste in my mouth and I contemplate why I feel so bummed about the conclusion. The story is good but quite a few things didn’t make sense or shouldn’t/ didn’t need to happen. I really like Beatrice as a heroine she showed character and development but I felt like we were told she had changed a lot several times over by different people which felt a little forced. I think there was one solid plot twist with Laif (spelling?) but Cale was unnecessary.

At one point in the first book she says she was life, I thought that maybe if she used her abilities properly she could prove that she can be death, and create new life but she can’t heal or give new life? That seemed like a missed opportunity. The conclusion also felt rushed, when listening I couldn’t believe there was an hour left with so much to wrap up and address. There were plot holes and that was frustrating, how is it Laif didn’t know his men were betraying him? There was also no reason to drive Miriam insane... I’ll also never understand why Cale had to get off’d. Yes for climax and emphasis on how dire the situation was but it wasn’t even a satisfying kind of death. Also there wasn’t enough of a mourning for him. The ending just seemed lacking and jumbled, I felt a little confused sometimes and re-listened.

I still enjoyed the books and characters, loved Vanessa’s narration and I don’t regret reading it , I love my girl Jane but I’m not as satisfied as I thought I’d be.
