Publisher's summary

My twin brother has started to go mad, and my powers are the cause.

Nobody knows how to stop it, and all the facts are telling me that unless I can cure him, my brother is very likely going to try and kill me soon. And that's just how this whole mess starts. From there I run face first into a whole stack of problems, including a crazy werewolf girl, a large pack of flesh-eating ghouls, and a trip to the greatest repository of magical knowledge in the world, where someone like me is definitely not welcome. There, I discover dark secrets from before the birth of modern civilization, and make an enemy of the toughest woman I've ever met, one whose motto may as well have been "when in doubt, stab it a lot"!

If that wasn't enough, Windward Academy has a new magic teacher, who also doesn't like me very much (who does these days?). She's not only far more powerful than I am, she's also hiding secrets of her own, any one of which could vastly complicate an already touchy situation. But I can't let any of that stop me. I've got to find a way to help Des, but the only paths open to me are costly and horrifically dangerous.

No matter what I do, I'm bound to lose something precious. I still have to try.

Spectacular, my favorite since Dresden files

There are no complaints with this series other than there are only 2 books. It has the great snark of a British writer. I would only wish there was a little less sexism but hay, not enough for me to complain about it.

Even better than the first book

Can't believe the rest of the series isn't available on audible. Time to dust off my kindle.

Easy Listening

The story is immersive, and the narrator brings great nuance to the character of Matthew Graves. He is easy to listen to, keeps a good pace, and puts inflection in where needed. The story kept my interest throughout the book.

Love it!

A refreshing take on the chosen one stories. Love the snark in it too. Not all about romance and the same old tales

Great Series

the second book is even better than the first. I've read every book in the series and I really enjoy it. one of the things that I really like is the snark. another good series to look at if you like snarky characters is Courts and Cabals

Loved it.

Fantastic series. I love the humor. There is nothing I dislike about the series. I do wish it was a tad bit more adult and the protagonist was a tad bit older.

Reluctant fan because it is so good

So I started the first book thinking ‘meh’. In the beginning I thought ‘why on earth would they choose a narrator whose voice sounds so much older than 17?’

Look, I have no problems admitting I was wrong on both fronts. I honestly have not listened to a series where the main character’s inner dialogue felt more real. And the narrator totally gets it. His intonation and well, just everything. I seriously don’t think I would have enjoyed either book as much had I read it.

I am not going to give anything away. Start with the first book, give the narrator time and just listen for the enjoyment of listening. SO MUCH FUN. Hang your literary critic hat at the door.

Gimme more. No really, where is the next one?!?

Love this series!!!

An amazing series of books, lots of humor and magic. Very likeable protagonist. Just wish the next book was available as an audiobook.

Love the banter

The real magic is in the banter. I love how charming most of the characters are. They’re so alive and downright lovable.
