Publisher's Summary

A corrupt corporation. Ruthless assassins. Will the family that runs together… die together?

Fifteen-year-old Zach Monaghan has a target on his back. In the witness protection program for his father’s whistleblowing, he’s now run away, back to his old home in Chicago. Zach wants to get back to his friends and to Lindsey, the girl he’d met right before being whisked off in the middle of the night. But escaping his fake identity won’t last long if two contract killers catch up to him…

Big Joe Gorski has climbed the ladder from street thug to tycoon. Now he’s got it all - riches - status - police, and politicians in his pocket. But life at the top is suddenly unsteady and one slip can bring it all down. With a scheming partner, politicians who won’t stay bought and Feds breathing down his neck, Gorski has to move carefully. But being careful goes against his nature. He’s a raging bull and he’ll do whatever it takes to keep what he has … let the bodies fall where they will.

As the ruthless killer draws closer to Zach, surviving the greedy corporate plot may force the whole family to get their hands bloody…

A bit predictable...

Runaway is a good book though it is kind of predictable. I think Peter Thompson's first book Living Proof is so much better. That book has such a unique and original storyline.
Anyway, the publisher's summary for Runaway is pretty comprehensive so I won't add to it.
I will buy more from this author, I'm curious to see what his next book will be.
Gary Tiedemann does a great job narrating.

Thompson delivers a heart-pounding thrill ride in The Runaway. All the characters are well thought out with complex stories if their own. It is an edge of your seat, thrilling, suspense, novel. I look forward to checking out other works by this author.

The narrator, Gary Tiedemann, really made this story come to life. He individualized each character and made them seem authentic. The heightened suspense kept me on edge.

Enjoyable Story

I went into this book completely blind. Honestly, I didn't mean to sign up for this tour, but whoa, am I ever glad I did! I've never been one for audiobooks because I get so distracted, but while listening to this one, I was able to work on some crochet orders I had. I started the book on a Tuesday and by mid-Thursday, I was finished. I paused it on my computer, downloaded the Audible app on my phone and took my phone with me while cooking dinner just so I could listen to the book! Once dinner was over and the kitchen cleaned up, I opened it back up on my computer to finish listening to it! This book was fantastic! Constant thrills, constantly wondering what was going to happen next.

Again, not one for a lot of thriller books, I tend to stick with romance and other books like that. But wow!! This was an awesome fast-paced, action-packed, heart-pounding book. All of the characters were well thought out, in my opinion, with awesome backstories of their own.

I really enjoyed listening to this narrator! He brought the characters to life with his various accents and different voices. The heightened suspense of the book really kept me on edge and I notably enjoyed this book!

Fast Paced, Fun Read(Listen)

This book was fast paced and an enjoyable listen. It never really slowed down or got bogged down as some books do. Gary Tiedemann did a great job with the narration and gave each character a different and appropriate voice which really brought them to life. The story was interesting and I enjoyed how it was written from the perspective of the many different characters which kept things fresh and interesting. I felt some of the characters and side stories could have been the basis of their own books and exploits. There were some actions by characters in the book that I thought were pretty foolish and unrealistic but in life people do stupid and irrational things all the time so I suppose it isn't completely unrealistic, but that aside it never took me out of the story.

The Narrator did a great job of keeping me involved and keeping the action going. Will definitely look at picking up more by this author. Fun! The action never stops!

What a fun book! I really enjoyed this story, even with it’s few tiny faults. Zach is so relatable. He’s a teenager who’s been yanked from his happy life by a sudden decision by his dad and he’s ticked. He doesn’t want to live in Phoenix! He wants to go back home to Chicago where’s he a star on the football team, has great friends, and there’s also an interesting girl (Lindsey). So, he boards a bus and heads home. Of course, this causes his family a ton of trouble.

I love Witness Protection stories. I don’t know why, but I’m always a bit fascinated with them, whether it’s a criminal who has turned witness or a fairly honest person who saw something bad go down. So right away, I was hooked on this story. How do you keep a witness (or their family) safe if they don’t cooperate? Well, as we see in this book, it’s very hard to do so.

I got a real kick out of some of the bad guys. Now they come in all flavors in this book, from macho mafia man Joe to nervous sneaky Birdman. But my favorites were Lewis (he’s got anger issues) and Wade (a daft yet efficient young man). Those two paired together gave me some laughs, even if they were at the expense of their victims.

Zach’s mom was a bit on the dramatic side, and that whole bit about her female intuition was a bit silly. The most believable female character turned out to be Lindsey. I really liked that she’s still a teen, being afraid in many of the situations, yet she does her share of butt kicking when she can. She makes some mistakes but she also keeps her head in other situations.

The story added more layers as things went on. There are multiple people who want Zach’s dad to disappear and not all of them are wearing Bad Guy labels. Zach’s dad eventually has to take a much more hands on approach to the situation and I was glad to see that he was also scared at times yet still did his best to fix the situation.

While I would have liked a little more from the ladies, there was never a dull moment in the story. I listened to the story in 2 sessions, simply because I had to sleep a bit. Otherwise, I would have listened to it all in 1 go. 4.75/5 stars.

The Narration: Gary Tiedemann makes are really great Zach. He’s got that angry teen guy down. Then he does a great job with Mafia Joe and Mr. Birdman as well as angry Lewis and daft Wade. His female voices were spot on as well. His voice for the Russians or Eastern Europeans sounded more Spanish to me, but I can forgive that. The story got the characters across. Tiedemann’s pacing was perfect and there were no technical issues with the recording. 4.75/5 stars.

What else could go wrong?

I listen to this one very quickly. The title does not lie and it is nonstop action from the very start to the very end. There is never a chance to catch your breath. One thing in particular I like very much was the mention of very famous Chicago landmarks and various neighbourhoods throughout the Chicagoland region. I was rooting for our characters throughout the whole story. There’s a good mix from the annoying all the way to the loveable and each character plays on each other very nicely. I did want a little bit more involvement from some secondary characters but overall it was very well written. There were even some stereotypes in this book that I found to be quite fitting. Everything even wrapped up in a nice neat package at the end too. Could I guess what was going to happen next at times… Maybe but that is what I liked about this book. I think this would make an excellent blockbuster movie. The performance was done very very well. This is my third book by this narrator and he does not disappoint. He’s got that something about his voice that just adds to the tension. Whether it was being dark and sinister like are criminals or young and energetic like our teenage main character he did a fantastic job voicing both. I even like the way he portrayed characters when they were yelling or screaming as it sounded very realistic. Overall a very enjoyable listen for me.

Surprisingly great!

I normally stay away from action-type audiobooks and ebooks. However, I'm really happy I didn't skip by The Runaway. Peter J. Thompson really turns up the thriller feel that really kept me fascinated the entire time. I enjoyed the various characters. Now there is a lot of characters but I never once did I feel lost with who was who it who was doing what. I really liked it and felt the thrill of it through the entire nearly 11 hours.

The narrator, Gary Tiedemann was fantastic! Really. I was amazed with his storytelling. He has this voice that I could listen to for hours. He's pleasant sounding and still captures so the emotions and attitudes perfectly! Add this 5 star narration to such smooth writing with a story that has everything!
