Publisher's Summary

From the international best-selling author of the hot, new thriller Dark Visions....

Haunted by his past

In a world ruled by the purest survivors, the fiercest warriors, Gage was the strongest - an American executing his country’s darkest missions with legendary cunning and skill. Until, wounded and dying in a scorched wasteland, he found mercy at the hands of an aging priest.

Separated from the secret world he once dominated, he chose a life of exile, pursuing a lonely peace, a solitary faith. Only the murder of his mentor and the mysterious theft of an ancient manuscript can compel him to emerge from solitude.

Hunted by a deadly force

Now his greatest battle begins. From the shadowed streets of New York to the inner recesses of the Vatican and beyond, he challenges the awesome might of an ageless evil. Bound by a promise to a dying friend, he wages war once more in the dark world he left behind.

WOW...What a story

This is the second book by Huggins I have listen to and he writes a very good story. The action and mystery he develops into the story is very entertaining. If you are the type that likes action then you will definitely enjoy this book.

Intense

Alot of great action and intrigue.
Gage as the MC is someone you really, really want on your side.
Mr Lennon as always is great as the narrator.
I will say that I enjoyed Mr Huggins "Dark Visions" better. That has more to do with my taste in a story line.
This is definitely worth your time if you like the covert government type story.

A big 5* story

The Reckoning.. It is a big book 19 hours, But you just get immersed in the story line and before you know it -it's finished.
It is tense and gripping with powerful characters.
The author crafts a beautiful tale and coupled with very descriptive writing, paints a tale of intrigue and suspense.
Tom Lennon the narrator has a distinctive style well suited to this style of book, he kept my interest to the end, and his style certainly adds to the experience.
This is a book I can whole heartedly recommend to any one who enjoys a top quality thriller.

Great Thriller!

The Reckoning by James Byron Huggins pulled me in from the very beginning. Tom Lennon is perfect for this action listen. I loved how he gave distinguishable voices for the various characters. The twists in this book were awesome. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review. I will definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator. The ending of this book was fantastic!

A fun listen - engaging, story well told

I enjoyed this listen. A great job by author and narrator.

This reminded me of a detective story by Dan Brown. Both the good guys and the bad guys are clever and determined and this keeps you guessing. A suspicious attitude towards villains with religious authority carries the story along.

The author knows how to let the story unfold without giving too much away, too quickly. The narrator does a great job of keeping you engaged in the story and helping the pace and story line move along enjoyably.

A terrific listen!

Very long, but keeps you interested all the way.

I was a little concerned about the length here. Would it be slow moving? Overly descriptive and just plain drawn out? No way, I loved it.

Excellent plot well read.

A thrilling work - ruined by the narration

I first read Huggins' The Reckoning many years ago, and it has been one of my all-time favourite books ever since. From the day I first acquired my Audible account, I have waited for the day when this thrilling masterpiece would be added to the Audible catalogue. So you can imagine my excitement when the title appeared on the preorder list - I think we all know that feeling.

Unfortunately, my excitement was to be dashed when I finally downloaded it. This incredible, thrilling read has, unfortunately, been delivered through a performance, which simply does not do Huggins' work justice. I had been expecting to be caught in the tension and suspense typified by a Sean Mangan performance, or to be swept up in a masterful vocal performance of Simon Vance, nuanced in its application of accents and inflection. Within in the first few pages of The Reckoning, a reader encounters shadowy figures, both good and evil, expressing tension, anticipation, sarcasm, nonchalance, exhaustion, confusion, fear, grief, anger, and determination - none of which are conveyed through the performance of the narrator. Instead, this wonderful work is delivered in a near monotonous tone, dismissive of any inclination toward vocal inflection to communicate any emotion of the characters, or any level of suspense, all instead toned to what can't help but feel like boredom.

It pains me, but I have to return this work. In fact, this will be the second time I have returned this book. As Audible currently only allows you to review works in you library, having already returned the work, I re-purchased the title just to write this review.

I do hope Audible considers re-recording this work with a narrator who can do the masterful Huggins justice.

good book, bad reading

the story is good, descriptive and engaging, but the narrarator sounds like a robot, it's so choppy that it makes it difficult to immerse yourself in the story.
