“Absolutely brilliant!” (Jonathan Maberry, New York Times best-selling author)

The new supernatural thriller from New York Times best-selling author Peter Clines

You can still owe the dead.

Hector was the best of the best. A government operative who could bring armies to a halt and nations to their knees. But when his own country betrayed him, he dropped off the grid and picked up the first of many bottles.

Natalie can’t remember much of her life before her family brought her to the US, but she remembers the cages. And getting taken away to the Project with dozens of other young children to become part of their nightmarish experiments. That’s how she ended up with the ghost of a dead secret agent stuck in her head.

And Hector owes Natalie’s ghost a big favor.

Now Hector and Natalie are on the run from an army of killers sent to retrieve her. Because the people behind the Project are willing to risk almost anything to get Natalie back and complete their experiments.

A little different, as you can expect from Mr Clines. Has ties to other characters you may remember, in a world that you can recognize, without being a direct link to any of his other stories. A good chunk is the narration of a horribly abused and psychologically programmed young immigrant girl, but if you progress in the story you will see that it is about much more than just a government black-site.
Narrator did well, I just don't feel like he had much range, but not everyone can be Ray Porter I guess.

Another fun listen from a great author!

The story here was decent. I really enjoy the worlds and other-worlds that Clines paints in his novels, and this is still there. The characters are interesting, and a slight diversion from the “normal” folks that tend to appear in Clines’ novels.

Perhaps I’m spoiled by other narrators recently, but I wasn’t impressed by this reading. Most bothersome though was the production. There is an endless amount of clicking and popping where all of the edits were made. It’s very distracting.

New story for Clines, still creepy

As a father I clinged onto the storyline and loved every bit of it.

Amazing!

As always another gripping and fun story from a great author. Love his books. Well written and good audio performance.

Fun story

I thought the idea for the story was great, and for the first hour, I thought I was gonna like it. Then I hit what seemed like an hour straight of a little girl telling a story in such a way that was just tedious. Then came the thinly disguised lectures on immigration policy, and the poor hispanic protagonist getting picked on by racist cops, then the very corny action scenes. And, to top it all off, the close of the story didn't make any sense. Supposedly there are beings trying to come back into this world because they can't inhabit physical bodies in the one where they are stuck, and they miss having physical form, but throughout the book, the girl is vomiting up insects that already have physical form from the other side. This one was just a dud all the way around. Facepalm.

Not his best
