Story
In retreat from a devastating loss and crushing injustice, Katie lives alone in a fortresslike stone house on Jacob’s Ladder island. Once a rising star in the art world, she finds refuge in her painting. The neighboring island of Ringrock houses a secret: a government research facility. And now two agents have arrived on Jacob’s Ladder in search of someone—or something—they refuse to identify. Although an air of menace hangs over these men, an infinitely greater threat has arrived, one so strange even the island animals are in a state of high alarm.

In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

There once was a killer who knew the night, its secrets and rhythms. How to hide within its shadows. When to hunt. He roamed from town to town, city to city, choosing his prey for their beauty and innocence. His cruelties were infinite, his humanity long since forfeit. But still... he had not yet discovered how to make his special mark among monsters, how to come fully alive as Death. This is the story of how he learned those things, and of what we might do to ensure that he does not visit us.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Dean Koontz gives new meaning to blood brothers in this chilling audiobook of friendship gone awry.
No one could understand why Colin and Roy were best friends. Colin was so shy; Roy was so popular. Colin was fascinated by Roy - and Roy was fascinated by death. Then one day, Roy asked his timid friend: “You ever killed anything?” From that moment on, the two were bound together in a game too terrifying to imagine - and too irresistible to stop.
NOW WITH BONUS SHORT STORY “SILENCE”
30 years later...the story continues with the spine-tingling follow-up “Silence."

30 Years Old
People say they can't believe this is Dean Koontz and I wondered the same thing, While now packaged as Dean Koontz, it was written 30 years ago under a pseudonym and authors generally do that while honing their skills. I have been a fan of Dean since the 80's but this bad and I'd rather not consider it he work. Maybe the short story will redeem this for me but I don't think it will.
Think twice before buying.

Koontz Creepy
Koontz can write a variety of compelling stories and has hit the nail on the head with this a touch too realistic creepy story of childhood friends gone wrong. The short story should be the start of a series ala Ryan Decker but with a Koontz voice.

Glad I stuck with it.
Glad I stuck with it through its crass repugnant dark beginnings. If Koontz was not one of my favorite authors I would not have stayed with this book. It starts out with an abhorrent character and vulgar conversations that made me want to click to another book. After it got going,, It turned out to be a good read that held my attention. I would recommend staying with it and then through the linked short story to follow as well.
