At first glance I probably seem like any good-looking guy in their late twenties. I have an obscene amount of confidence, a tattooed body sculpted by the Nordic gods, and I love the ladies as much as they love me. But I'm not the average single guy. I'm Crown Prince Magnus of Norway, and my latest scandal just landed my entire royal family in hot water. Now the only way the monarchy can save face is for me to smarten up - publicly. If I don't, I'll no longer be heir apparent to the throne. So it's either I abdicate my future role as King, or I get married.

A widowed father of two little girls. The beautiful nanny he's hired to raise them. A forbidden romance unlike any other. When I first applied for the job I thought it would be like all the others: working as a nanny for an aristocratic family. Then I got the job and found out how wrong I was. Now I'm the new nanny for two adorable little girls who happen to be princesses. Their father is the widowed King of Denmark. And my new home? The royal palace in Copenhagen. Adjusting to my new life isn't easy but the hardest part hasn't been the girls who still grieve over their mother's death.

Story
Love, in English is a contemporary romance about the ultimate forbidden love story. To a restless dreamer like Vera Miles, it sounded like the experience of a lifetime. Instead of spending her summer interning for her astronomy major, she would fly to Spain where she'd spend a few weeks teaching conversational English to businessmen and women, all while enjoying free room and board at an isolated resort. But while Vera expected to get a tan, meet new people and stuff herself with wine and paella, she never expected to fall in love.

They say bad things happen in threes. After my boyfriend broke off our engagement, I lost my apartment, and was laid off from my job, I can definitely attest to that. They also say life is what happens when you say yes to new adventures. So when my two sisters invited me to ring in the new year in Ireland, I decided to throw all caution to the wind and go for it. I was going to let "saying yes" be my new resolution. Little did I know I'd spend New Year's Eve having a hot and dirty one-night stand with Padraig McCarthy, one hell of a sexy Irishman.

Growing up poor in small-town California as the oldest of six siblings, I knew I would never ride off into the sunset with anyone. That was even more apparent when a senseless tragedy took the lives of my parents, forcing me to become the sole guardian of our dysfunctional household at the mere age of 23. Then a fateful encounter literally brought Prince Charming to my doorstep. At first I thought Viktor was just your average businessman passing through, albeit obscenely handsome, six-foot-five, blue-eyed, and mysteriously rich. But soon I discovered the truth behind Viktor's façade.

He’s my brother’s best friend, the hot single dad next door. And one accidental sext later, my massive crush on him is no longer a secret. It’s my own damn fault. I’m 30 years old, for heaven’s sake. Publisher's Summary
Linden McGregor is tall, rugged, and gunslinger handsome - a helicopter pilot with a Scottish brogue and charm to spare. He's also one of Stephanie Robson's best friends and has fit into that box for as long as she's known him.
Beautiful, funny, and an ambitious businesswoman, Stephanie Robson is one of Linden McGregor's best friends and has fit into that box for as long as he's known her. But some relationships can't be boxed, can't be classified, can't be tamed.
Back in their mid-20s and tired of the competitive hit-or-miss dating scene of San Francisco, Steph and Linden made a pact to marry each other if neither one of them were in a serious relationship by the time they hit 30.
It sounded like fun and games at the time, but as the years to 30 tick past and lovers come and go out of their lives, the pact becomes larger than life.
Sex is inevitable. Friendships are tested. Hearts are on the line. The pact is about to change everything.

NOT A BAD BOOK BUT NOT FOR ME
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not particularly because I struggled to finish it and realized that I only finished it to justify purchasing it.
Would you be willing to try another book from Karina Halle? Why or why not?
I do not believe I will read any other books. To be fair, I just believe that because this is not my preferred genre, paranormal romance or urban fantasy, it bored me and if the other stories or arranged the same then there isn't much point in reading/listening to them.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Perhaps practice accents more.
Do you think The Pact needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Yes, of course, the secondary characters were featured so much that I am sure others would like to see their stories from their point of view.
Any additional comments?
This book really was well written but it truly felt like it was dragging and not much happened from year to year. Again, I believe it bored me because I am more into paranormal romance, urban fantasy and erotica. Also, another turn off was a few scenes where a female hit and threw things at someone and it was addressed as, 'meh, that happens'...That's not cool, man.

My Review:
Overall: 4.5
Performance: 4.5
Story: 4.5
This story was so enjoyable. I really, really liked it. The book is about three friends as they grow into adulthood. James and Steph dated once upon a time, but all three of them have them have been best friends forever. Steph, Linden, and James. But it was Steph and Linden who made the pact on one of their birthdays in their early 20's that if they were both single when they hit 30 then the two of them would get married.
Then the first half of the book is following each of them through the years of their birthdays, the ups and downs of their relationships and their never-ending friendship. I loved this long intro into where they are at and how they are growing into adulthood. It shows that they've had good times, with and without each other. And they've each had meaningful relationships with other people.
But their lives change when they hit 30 and the romance ramps up from there.
I adore friends to lovers books and this book is a great example as to why. Linden and Steph are bff's and that's a lot of the reason why they've never done the relationship route although they are both attracted. No one wants to screw up the perfect relationship they already have. They know each other and have such an amazing time together. What if adding sex to the mix screws all that up? Then there's their other friend, James, in the mix. The signs are there that he still has feelings for Steph. They wouldn't only be risking the friendship between the two of them.
The narrators on this one did a phenomenal job. Linden is Scottish, so there's an accent to contend with which both narrators did amazingly well. The story is written in switching points of view between Linden and Steph. I love that the author went with both a male and female narrator for that. The two voices worked really cohesively together.
The book was amazing and the narrators nailed it. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this story. So much that I bought the second book in audio format also. I can't wait to get to know Linden's brother, Bram, better. He was awesome at the end of this story.

A simple love story, but a great listen.
Any additional comments?
Loved the characters. Stephanie is a heroine that you can support. She's not a doormat (like so many romance heroines' these days---what's up with that?) and Linden is the manly-man type you'd expect from a romance, but he's not the twisted, self-serving jerks that are so popular today in everything from erotica to new young adult fiction.
Overall, I'd highly recommend this book. There are some heart-melting scenes and its funny too.

One of my favorites
I loved this story; it's a great friends to lovers Romance. I really enjoyed the slow progression to a relationship. Stephanie and Linden were friends for years harboring a lot of angst and passion for one and other. When they finally had come together, they were so great for each other. I also enjoyed the banter, side characters and setting. Linden annoyed me at the end, with how he handled the situation. James and Nadine were my two least favorite characters. But I did feel really invested in the story. The author painted a great picture of their group dynamic.
I loved Lidia Dornet's narration and Shaun Grindell really bought Linden's character to life. I like how they both used accents for the Scottish characters, made for cohesive story telling.

I have read the kindle edition of this book and was excited to listen to the audio version. The story was good, enjoyed the characters, but there should be a limit when it comes to the f bomb, after a while it takes away from the story, when you’re writing about intelligent people you shouldn’t make them sound stupid by giving them filthy mouths
