A PROUD BEAUTY

When the tragic death of her gamester father leaves her destitute and alone, society beauty Sylvia Stafford finds work as a governess in a merchant's household in Cheapside. Isolated from the fashionable acquaintance of her youth, she resigns herself to lonely spinsterhood...until a mysterious visitor convinces her to temporarily return to her former life - and her former love.

A SCARRED BEAST

Colonel Sebastian Conrad is no longer the dashing cavalry officer Sylvia once fell in love with. Badly scarred during the Sepoy Rebellion, he has withdrawn to his estate in rural Hertfordshire where he lives in near complete seclusion. Brooding and tormented, he cares nothing for the earldom he has inherited - and even less for the faithless beauty who rejected him three years before.

A SECOND CHANCE

A week together in the remote Victorian countryside is the last thing either of them ever wanted. But when fate intervenes to reunite them, will a beastly earl and an impoverished beauty finally find their happily-ever-after? Or are some fairy-tale endings simply not meant to be?

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!

I had initially planned to listen to this over the course of my long commute to and from work. However, I found myself listening until the very end... nearing midnight...all in one sitting. Such a beautiful story and perfectly narrated.

What a great way to end a stressful day.

Delightful!!!

I LOVED this audio book!! What a touching story of two individuals who suffered so much, but whose love for each other endures for years despite years of separation and huge misunderstandings. This is now my favorite Mimi Matthew's book.

And, Justine Eyre, one of my most favorite narrators, is masterful in her interpretations of all of the different characters, as always.

I Loved This Story!

I listened to the audio version of this story and absolutely loved it! The story itself was such a good one and I truly did not want to stop listening. The narration was wonderful and fit the story perfectly. The only thing that would have made the book even better would have been an epilogue. The ending was cute, but I would have liked to peek into at least a few month into the future with these characters and see farther into their happily ever after.

Quite a maddeningly, lovely story

Audio version was quite nice, and I highly recommend it. Maddening in terms of how some men can be so bull-headed (extremely stubborn and unseeing what is clearly shown before them). This is my first Mimi Matthews story but will surely not be my last. Narrator Justine Eyre did a first class job. Highly recommended for those who enjoy Victorian romance.

Listen to this book repeatedly, never grow tired of it!

Mimi Mattews is a favorite author of mine and the Lost Letter does not disappoint! Loved the characters and story. I enjoyed Justine’s narration a great deal as well, enough to seek out other books she has narrated. When I need to unwind I listen to this; I never tire of it - Highly recommended!

Short and Interesting

I liked the couple very much. The former Colonel, now Earle, was badly injured and scarred by saber strike to the face. Before he left to go fight in India, he and Sylvia were very attracted to one another. A terrible misunderstanding broke them apart, but perhaps their love for one another was never broken? Before the Colonel left for India, he was poor and Sylvia was wealthy. Now, three years later their fortunes have reversed. The Colonel's father and older brother died and the Colonel inherited the Earldom. Sylvia is now poor and socially ostracized after her father's suicide and she is now working as a governess. The new Earl's sister wants them to reunite, but there is a lot of bad history to overcome.

Endearing Story

I’m learning fast that I love Mimi’s writing. Her stories are enduring and beautiful. This was well written, the characters were enjoyable. The narration was amazing. This story reminded me much of my favorite novel Jane Eyre. I would highly recommend for a read of pure entertainment and a happy ending.

A charming romance

Tipped with trajedy and misunderstanding, Matthew's understanding of the Victorian era and compelling romance is enchanting.

Page Turning

An enjoyable read of a series of misunderstandings in Victorian Times. How life in their particular part of the world led to misguided thinking. I think it is a book worth reading if you enjoy Victorian romance. The writing is clear, the dialogue is excellent with strong characters.

A sweet, happily ever after story.

I loved this Victorian romance story by Mimi Matthews. The characters were endearing. There was humor. There was not an excess of misunderstanding between the two primary characters. The narrator, Justine Eyre, was excellent. The story itself was interesting enough to hold my attention. I recommend this book if you want to take a break from everyday worries and concerns and allow your mind to relax and enjoy something sweet.
