On the anniversary of his father’s passing, Jon leaves home in search of answers. The land is full of mystery and intrigue, and Jon wants to explore it all with the dream of one day becoming a sorcerer. But when Jon receives an invite to the castle for training, he starts to believe there has to be a catch.

A long time ago, Jon’s father was once a guard near the capital city. Now Jon finds himself back where his father used to work, and he’s beginning to learn why his father had wanted to raise him away from here. He will discover that, along with certain threats to the kingdom, there are also many magical arts to learn. Some seem stronger than others, but all have their use. Jon must come to understand the complexities of sorcery as he uncovers the mysteries and threats to the kingdom. But he also must learn to deal with the other sorcerers who have come to train at the castle at the same time as him...some of whom are hard to trust.

I like the author's character centric writing style. This is the second book of his I've read recently and liked both the styles very well, this one being a bit faster paced with the plot and detailing out the magic to a greater degree. There were a few minor plot hiccups that I just didn't understand, but really they were not important. Overall great story, 4.5 stars and will be looking to continue the series.

Interesting story with detailed magic system

The story was good, narration is great, and the magic system was unique. Unfortunately, this book dragged on and on and on about the magic system. I almost didn't buy the second book, but I gave it a shot and it got a thousand times better. If you find the first book slow, keep going. It's worth it.

It gets way better

A B.T. Narrow audiobook was my choice for 4 hospital 3 hour minimum mileage drives. With the follow-up surgery in 4 days, I am going back to see if there is another adventure by same author and hopefully the same excellent narrator, Simon Vance. If this is a series with similar settings and some of the same great characters.

Excellent Audio Adventure

I truly enjoyed the way the magic system works and is explained in the story not to mention the decision the main character makes.

phenomenal

I enjoyed this book very much, but it is evident that there will probably be a long series. The author goes into great detail about how the magic works comparing it to music. It was a little much for me, but I liked the characters enough to overlook it.

fun story

He developed a great world. I like where the stories heading. It’s interesting that the characters are not all powerful. It adds some realism.

Wonderful characters. Great story.
